ALLEN P. WEBB, OF OHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 104,671, dated Janie 21, 1870.
IMPROVED GOAL-SIPTER.
.l'heScnedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whiclL-will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,- in which Figure l is'a side elevation of my improvement, showing. the top or cover thrown back.
Figure 2 is a top plan of the rotating sitter, with the slide partiallyremoved.
The purpose of my invention is the production of a convenient device for sifting coal, and one which will prevent the dissemination of dust.
It consists in the combination of a box having a removable hinged cover, converging ends to the bottom part thereof, an open bottom, which opening is covered by a removable drawer, and a cylindrical rotating sieve-having a portion of the periphery thereof made in the form of a slide.
a shows the bottom part of the box.
I), the sieve.
c, the slide therein.
i (I, the drawer.
-e, the cover of the box.
j, the crank to revolve the sitter.
h, lips to overlap the edges of the slide 0.
i, the supports of the whole device.
7.: is a rest for the hinged cover 0, to prevent it from falling too 'far back when opened.
on is a latch, and
I a an eye, by means of which the cover is fastened onto the box a when the said cover is closed.
The operation is'as follows:
The slide 0 being drawn out, the partially-consumed coal is poured into the rotating sifter b. The slide is then pushed back so as to.c1ose-the aperture. The
cover is then turnedover the rotating sifter and fastened by the latch on.
The sitter is then rotated by the crank 1; when the ashes, falling through the perforations in the sifter, are deposited in-t-he drawer (l, the box a being closed as described, so that no dust is allowed to escape without the same.
The drawer may then be removed and the ashes thrown away.
The slide 0 is then removed entirely out of its position, the drawer (I returned to its place, and the sil'ter b so rotated that the aperture therein filled by, the slide 0, but opened by the removal of the same, is brought to the bottom, or immediately overthe drawer (l, the result of which is that the sifted coal is then also deposited in the drawer d, from whence it may be removed as desired for consumption;
What I claim as my invent-i0 d desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the cylindrical sifter b, having slides c, lips h, and crank f, with the box a, made as described, and having the cover e and drawer d, to
operate as herein set forth.
