Throwing oli' the lorek-latch piece, by turning the lock-handle in the proper direction, the lever K is leftl free, and, by the action of thebent spring A, is moved out Vof .connection with the tumblers of bolt-handle,
so that, with their combination destroyed, it is, as is obvious, impossible to make a connection of the bolthandle with the bolts,even should the loek-tumblers be properly'set, as in such case the standard S to connection-lever K, if the lock-handle be turned to move the same, would abut against the periphcries of the tumblers, establishing no connection.
The upper part B? of the vertical arm to connection-lever K is hinged or pivoted to the main portion, which is -extendedat d, along. the part B2, forming a bearing therefor on one side. The object of this construction is to prevent injury to the locking mechanism as the bolts are operated, said hinged part B2, when the connection-lever K is moved by the action of the bolt-handle to draw in the bolts, yielding or giving to the force thereof against a fixed collar or nut, C", on the stem connected with locking-devices, thus obviating concussion or jar to the inside of the lock.

With this lever-connection between the slide-bar, as the stem is actuated to throw the connection-lever K into connection with the holt-handle, said slide-bar, at the proper time, through the movement of the said stem, and just previous to the completion of its full movement, is slid on the rest, bringing its tongue-piece g just beyond the edge b of' rest, and into positon to serve as a rest and hearing to the tail-piece i of connection-lever K, Aas in the turning of the bolt-handle the bolts are thrown from time'to time.
.1, In lieu of arranging the bolt-tumblers directly on the spindle to bolt-handle, they may be on an independent spindle, and a connection between the two spindles made through gearing; and, also, itis obvious that the action and movement of the connection-1ever K is -not dependent on the use of tnmblers to bolt-handle, but with tumblers, located to be set by the bolt-handle, as described, double security is obtained, and the throwing of the bolts rendered, to the uninitiated, the more complex and embarassing.
' Various forms of locks for operating the connectionlever may be employed, and eithei` ofthe class known as combination-locks, or of any other class, and, in fact, with a locking mechanismattached to or connected with the holt-handle, for operation substantially as described, it is not absolutely necessary, although it is preferable, to have locking devices for actuating the connection-lever K or its equivalent -Having described my invention,
What I claim` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Thev lever K, pivoted to bolt M, in combina-tion- I with the stein H and the lock-handle, the bolt-handie, and their locking-tumblers, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The armedlever K, formed with tail-pieces' and hinged part B2, in combination with the slide Y2 and stem H, substantially as and for the purpose described. 3. The stem H, provided with nuts I C2, in combination with the hinged part B2 of the lever K and with the level' Z2, both Iplaying on the stem between the nuts, and operating, in combination with the slide Y", substantially as described.'
4. The slide Y2, having at one end the tongue-piece h,and moving on the rest W2, in combination ,with the lever K, formed with tail-piece i, and with the pivoted lever Z2 hinged at the other end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
