This invention relates to what are known as knob locks for doors, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and which will be strong and durable and not liable to easily get out of order or need repair, and which may be adjusted to doors of various thicknesses.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-.
lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a door provided with my improved lock device, the section being on the line 11 of Fig. 2, and the lock casing being shown in full lines, and the knob and spindle construction in section;

The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in a prior application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me other lock casings of this class, and said lock casing is provided with the usual key bolt a and latch bolt 65*, which is operated in the usual manner by a spindle a which passes through the door and through said lock casing and is rectangular in form in cross section.
Secured to the plate 0 on the inner side of the door by means of screws or bolts 0 is an oblong casing 0 which is cup-shaped in cross section and provided with a collar 0 and in connection with the casing c I employ a knob (Z which is hollow in form andprovided with a tubular neck 6Z2 which is closed at its inner end as shown at (Z and the neck (Z2 is inserted into the collar 0 of the casing 0 and secured therein by screws 0, and mounted in the tubular neck (Z of the knob (Z and on the inner end of the spindle a is a longitudinally movable clutch sleeve f provided at its inner end with an angular clutch member f adapted to enter and operate in the aperture 0 of the plate 0, and mounted in the outer end of the tubular neck (Z of the knob d is a. spiral spring 9 which normally serves to force the clutch sleeve f inwardly.
The knob (Z is the inner knob of my improved knob lock, or the knob on the inner side of the door, and the spindle a passes through the clutch sleeve f, and the inner end portion thereof is provided with a plurality of recesses a arranged longitudinally thereof, and the neck (Z of the knob cl is provided in the top side thereof with a longitudinal slot 6Z4 and passed inwardly and loosely through the slot (Z is a lock pin 2' which is threaded into the clutch sleeve f, and provided at its inner end with a nose piece i adapted to enter either of the re cesses a, and mounted on the outer end of the pin i is a cam lock j adapted to operate in connection with a raised ear j on the neck (Z of the knob cl at the inner end of the slot 6F, and the cam lock 7' is provided with a milled head 7' whereby it may be manipulated.
All this construction of my improved lock on the inner side of the door is the same as that described and claimed in the application hereinbefore referred to, with the exception of the casing c and the clutch sleeve f which is longer and takes the place of the clutch plug shown and described in said application, and I will now describe the improvement which forms the basis of this application, and which is employed in connection with that part of the lock mechanism on the inner side of the door.
Mounted in the casing 0* and on the inner face of the crown portion thereof is a transversely movable and forked latch and lock bolt it having parallel side arms if, and provided at one end with a beveled nose piece h and one end of the casing 0 is provided with an aperture 0 through which the nose piece If of the latch and lock bolt h operates. The casing 0* is mounted transversely of the door and the aperture 0 is formed in the outer end thereof, and the latch and lock bolt it operates transversely of the door, and the inner ends of the side arms 72, thereof are provided with pins 71 and the inner end of the casing 0 is provided with corresponding pins it and mounted on the pins h and 72, are springs h which normally serve to force the latch and lock bolt h outwardly.
The inner ends of the arms k of the latch and lock bolt in are provided with inwardly directed feet h indicated in dotted lines in F ig. 2, and shown in full lines in Fig. 1. On the opposite sides of the latch and lock bolt h are guides k which are secured to, or in the casing 0*, and which serve to regu %)ate and guide the movement of said latch olt.
The inner end of the clutch sleeve 7 is provided adjacent to the clutch member f with an annular flange and outwardly of said annular flange said clutch sleeve is provided with oppositely directed ears 7" which oper-, ate in connection with the feet h on the inner ends of the arms 71,2 of the latch and lock bolt h, and the operation of these parts will be hereinafter described.
The top or cover of the casing 0 is provided in the outer end portion of said casing with two inwardly directed studs 7t and the first of which is longer than the other and is arranged in the longitudinal center of the casing 0, while the second is at one side of said casing. Pivoted in the inner end portion of the stud 7 is a rocker arm 72 the inner end of which operates in connection with the flange f .on the clutch sleeve f, and the outer end in connection with the nose ha .of the latch and lock bolt 7L and the outer end portion of said rocker arm is provided with a pin 70*.
Pivoted in the stud 70 on a pin 70 is a spring-controlled dog is provided in its free end with a recess 70" adapted to receive the pin 70 and midway thereof with a hook k The pin k projects at both sides of the arm k and the pin 70 projects at one side of the stud Z? and a spiral spring 70 is connected with the ends of said pins on the inner side of the stud W. The free end portion of the dog is", in addition to being recessed as shown at 70 in the outer end portion thereof, is also recessed on the side thereof adjacent to the arm 70 as shown at 70 in Fig. 2, to permit the operation of said dog, as hereinafter described, and a spring 71: is secured at the top of the stud 7c and operates in connection with the dog 766 to hold said dog in operative position at all times.
The plate Z) on the outer side of the door is provided with a collar 6 which is preferably conical in form, and the outer knob m is provided with a neck m which is inserted into the collar 6 of the plate 6, and said collar is recessed into the neck m of the knob m, and countersunk in the inner side of the plate Z) is a washer plate a through which are passed rods n which also pass through theneck m of the knob m and into said knob. The knob m is divided transversely of its aXis and mounted therein between the parts thereof, which parts may be connected in any desired manner, is a plate 0 into which the rods n are screwed, and this construction securely binds the plate Z) and the knob m together.
The plate 0 is provided in one side portion thereof with a radial slot 0 and mounted on the inner side of said plate is a radially movable dog 17 having an angular part p which passes through said slot and is connected with a lock plate 10 mounted on the outer side of the plate 0 and forming part of a key operated lock mechanism 7" mounted on the outer side of the plate 0 and adapted to be operated by a key passed through a key-hole m in the knob m, and engaging a key-pin s, all as shown and described in the application hereinbefore referred to.
The plate 0 is provided on its inner face with a stud or support 8 to which is pivoted a finger t which operates in connection with the dog 79 and bears on the point of a beveled nose p of said dog. The free end of the finger t is slightly curved and serves to center the corresponding ends of the spindle a and said end of said spindle is beveled on its diagonally opposite corners, as shown at (1 and the width of the finger t is the same, or approximately so as the transverse width of the dog 79, or the nose thereof, and the corresponding dimensions of the end or nose of the spindle a are the same as that of the width of the finger t.
In the outer end portion of the spindle a within the knob m is a transverse stop or safety pin u which is designed to hold the knob on and spindle a together before the plate Z) is secured to the door, or if at any time said plate should become detached from the door.
In Figs. 2 and 4 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown at w one side of the door frame to which is secured a latch plate 10 having an extension 10 provided with an aperture 10 through which the nose 71, of
the latch and lock bolt it operates, and the plates 7) and c are provided with key-holes y through which the bolt (0 is operated.
The lock mechanism 1 in the outer door knob m is intended, as hereinbefore described, to move the spindle a transversely of the door, as shown and described in the application referred to, but the invention described and claimed herein is not limited to any particular form of the key operated mechanism 1' for accomplishing this result.
The operation of locking and unlocking the door both from the inner and outer side thereof, with my improved lock mechanism, will be exactly the same as that of the construction shown and described in the application hereinbefore referred to, with the exception of the supplemental lock mechanism which forms the basis of this application, and involves the latch and lock bolt 72, and the parts connected with and operating in connection therewith and by which said latch and lockbolt is operated.
In the position of the parts shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the lock is shown in its open position in which the cam lock j is in position to lock the sleeve f against movement and out of engagement with the aperture 0 in the plate 0 and the door a may be opened and closed by rotating either of the knobs (Z and m, which operation withdraws the latch a and the latch and lock bolt 71., or the nose 7& thereof, which latter operati on is performed by the ears 7 on the clutch sleeve f engaging the feet It in the ends of the side members 72. of the latch and lock bolt h, as will be readily understood on a careful consideration of Figs. 2 and i of the drawing, and the rocker arm is held in the position shown in Fig. 4 by the annular flange f of the clutch sleeve f to permit the inward and out-ward movement of the latch and lock bolt h.
From this position of the parts the operation of locking the door may be accomplished from the inside by rotating the cam lock to permit the spring 9 to move the clutch sleeve f, or the clutch head f thereof, into engagement with the aperture 0 in the plate 0. It being understood that the dog p and finger t are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The inward movement of the clutch sleeve 7 disengages the ears from the feet 71,7 and releases the inner end of the rocker arm 70 from the flange F. The operation of closing the door will move the nose b of the latch and lock bolt h inwardly, and said nose will strike the hook member 70 on the dog 76 to disengage said dog from the pin 70* on the rocker arm 70 and the spring is will operate to move the outer end of said rocker arm downwardly into the po sition shown in dotted lines after the nose k of the latch and lock bolt it has moved outwardly into engagement with the aperture w in the extension w of the latch plate Q02, in which position of the parts the latch and lock bolt /2. is held against inward movement by the outer end of the rocker arm as will be readily understood. The latch a will also be held against movement by reason of the fact that the spindle o is held against rotation, as in the construction referred to in said prior application.
From the locked position of the parts the operation of opening the door may be accomplished from the inside by simply moving the cam lock j into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2 andl, which operation withdraws the clutch sleeve f, the latter operation serving to move the outer end of the rocker arm 70 out of engagement with the nose h of the latch and lock bolt h by the flange f engaging the inner end of said rocker arm.
The door may also be opened from the outer side thereof by inserting a suitable key through the key-hole m and the knob m to manipulate the lock mechanism therein, to move the pawl p into the position indi cated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, which opera tion will also move the clutch sleeve f into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4c and produce the result above described.
The bolt (4 may alSO be operated by a suitable key passed through the key-hole y to lock the door from the inner or outer side thereof in the usual manner. WVith the construction hereinbefore described, it will be noted that the door may be locked by three separate means, namely, the bolt (4 the latch bolt ar and the latch and lock bolt it, two of which are controlled or may be operated by the lock mechanism in the knob m, or by the cam lock 7' mounted in connection with the inner knob (Z.
It will be understood that the means for adjusting or adapting the lock for doors of different thicknesses consists of the spindle a with the recesses a spaced longitudinally in one end portion thereof and the lock pin 2' which is screwed into the clutch sleeve and is adapted to enter any of said recesses; and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my improvement, my in- 115 vention is not limited to the details thereof, herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of 120 my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the supplemental lock bolt 72, and the parts by which it is operated constitute what is known as a deadlock and while the 125 bolt 64 may be forced inwardly, as in other locks the bolt 71. cannot be forced inwardly when in its operative position, and said bolt can only be manipulated, or withdrawn from its operative position in the manner herein 130 &
described, and I thus provide a knob door lock which, in addition to possessing all the advantages of other locks of its class also involve asupplemental deadlock which cannot be manipulated in any way from the outer side of the door, except by means of the proper key.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door lock of the class described, said lock being provided with latch and lock bolts and with a spindle which passes transversely through the door and is provided at its opposite ends with knobs, and a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted on one side of the door and adapted to engage a latch plate secured to one side of the door frame, automatic devices for forcing said supplemental latch and lock bolt outwardly, and means involving the spindle and knobs for moving said supplemental bolt inwardly.
2. A knob lock for doors of the class described provided with latch and lock bolts and with a spindle which passes transversely therethrough and is provided at its opposite ends with knobs, a supplemental lock casing secured to one side of the door a supplemental bolt mounted in said casing and adapted to engage a latch plate secured to one side of the door frame, automatic devices for forcing said supplemental bolt outwardly, and means involving the spindle and the knobs for moving said supplemental bolt inwardly.
3. A knob lock for doors provided with latch and lock bolts and with a spindle which passes transversely therethrough and is provided at its opposite ends with knobs, a cas ing secured to one side of the door and through which the spindle passes, a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted in said casing and movable transversely of the door and adapted to engage a latch plate secured to one side of the door frame, automatic devices for forcing said supplemental bolt outwardly, and means whereby the turning of the spindle from either end thereof will move said supplemental bolt inwardly.
l. A knob lock for doors provided with a spindle which passes transversely therethrough and is provided with knobs, said lock being also provided with a latch bolt, a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted on one side of the door and movable transversely thereof and adapted to engage a latch plate secured to one side of the door frame, and devices for operating the supplemental latch and lock bolt when the main latch bolt is operated.
5. A knob lock for doors provided with a latch bolt and a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted on one side of the door and adapted to engage a latch plate secured to one side of the door frame, springs for forcing the supplemental latch and lock bolt outwardly, and means operated by the spindle for withdrawing said latch and lock bolt when the main latch bolt is withdrawn.
6. In a lock mechanism of the class ,described, a door, a lock mechanism comprising key and latch bolts mounted therein, plates mounted on the opposite sides of said door, a supplemental lock casing connected with one of said plates, knobs rotatably connected with the other of said plates and with said casing, a spindle movably mounted in said door, the lock mechanism mounted therein, said knobs and said supplemental casing, means mounted in connection with one of said knobs for moving said spindle longitudinally, tensionally controlled means mounted in connection with the other knob whereby said spindle may be locked against rotation, a latch and lock bolt mounted in said supplemental casing, and devices operated by said last named means for locking said latch and lock bolt against movement.
7 In a lock mechanism of the class described, a door, a lock mechanism comprising key and latch bolts mounted therein, plates mounted on the opposite sides of said door, a supplemental lock casing connected with one of said plates, knobs rotatably connected with the other of said plates and with said casing, a spindle movably mounted in said door, the lock mechanism mounted therein, said knobs and said supplemental casing, means mounted in connection with one of said knobs for oving said spindle longitudinally, a latch and lock bolt mounted in said supplemental casing, means whereby the rotation of said knobs will operate said latch bolt and latch and lock bolt inwardly and outwardly, and means mounted in connection with said knobs for locking said bolts against movement by said knobs.
S. In a lock mechanism of the class described, a door, a lock mechanism comprising key and latch bolts mounted therein, a longitudinally movable spindle passed transversely through said lock, knobs mounted on the ends of said spindle, a supplemental lock and latch bolt mounted in connection with one of said knobs, means whereby the rotation of said knobs will move said latch bolt and latch and lock bolt inwardly and outwardly, and means mounted in connection with said knobs for locking said bolts against movement by said knobs.
9. In a lock mechanism of the class described, a door, a lock mechanism comprising key and latch bolts mounted therein, a longitudinally movable spindle passed transversely through said lock, knobs mounted on the ends of said spindle, a supplemental lock and latch bolt mounted in connection with one of said knobs, a lock mechanism mounted in the other of said knobs and adapted to move the spindle longitudinally, means mounted in connection with said first named knob for moving said spindle longi tudinally, said means serving in one position thereof to hold said spindle so as to permit the rotation of said knobs to move said latch bolt and latch and lock bolt inwardly and outwardly, and the other position thereof to lock said bolts against movement by said knobs.
10. In a knob lock for doors, the combination with a lock mechanism mounted in the door, said lock mechanism comprising latch and lock bolts, of a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted on one side of the door, automatic devices for moving said latch and lock bolt outwardly, devices operated by the spindle of the lock mechanism mounted in the door for locking said bolt against inward movement, and means constituting a part of said devices for releasing said devices to permit the inward movement of the bolt.
11. In a knob lock for doors, the combination with a lock mechanism mounted in the door, said lock mechanism comprising latch and lock bolts, a supplemental latch and lock bolt mounted to move in a horizontal plane, automatic devices for moving said bolt outwardly, and devices operated by the spindle for locking said bolt against inward movement.
12. In a latch and lock bolt mechanism,
the combination with the movable spindle thereof, of a supplemental horizontally movable latch and lock bolt, and automatically operated devices for locking both of said bolts against inward movement by means of the spindle when the door is closed.
13. In a latch and lock bolt mechanism, the combination with the movable spindle thereof, of a supplemental horizontally movable latch and lock bolt, automatically operated devices for locking both of said bolts against inward movement by means of the spindle when the door is closed, and means for releasing said devices to permit the inward movement of said bolts to open the door.
14. In a .latch and lock bolt mechanism, the combination with the movable spindle thereof, of a supplemental horizontally movable latch and lock bolt, and means operated by the inward movement of said supplemental bolt in the operation of closing the door for locking said bolt against inward movement when in its operative position and the door is closed.
