To all whom 'it may concern! Be it known that I, GUsTAvE RUDOLPH, a citizen of the United States, `residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Clothes-Line` Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to safety clothes line holders and has for an object to provide a novel auxiliary fastener adapted to prevent falling o-f the clothes line should the main fastener become broken.

A further object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary fastener that may be easily applied to operative position and may be quickly detached to permit of closing the shutters of the window to which the clothes line may be applied.

With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of constructio-n within the scope of the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification z-Figure l is a front elevation of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 Fig. 1. Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the window casing which supports the clothes line is of the ordinary kind comprising a sill 10, head 11, stiles 12, and shutters 13 hinged to the stile.

The clothes line is of that type in the form of an endless loop comprising an upper length 14 and a lower length 15, the

bight of the loop remote from the windowl being usually secured to run through a sheave 16 fixed to an out building or the like 17, and the bight of the loop adjacent to the window being trained through a sheave 18 which is removably attached to a hook 19 that is screwed into the inner face ofthe window stile as shown in Fig. 3 so that upon the sheave being removed to detach the clothes line the shutter may be closed. Upon the sheave being removed, it is usually engaged upon a hook 20 secured togthe sill below the shutters to secure the line while the shutters are closed. This line is of the usual construction and forms no part of the present invention.

The auxiliary fastener comprising the subject-matter of this invention consists of a screw pin 21 which is provided with a yoke head 22 in the nature of flat plates 23 which are provided with alined orifices 24 to receive the hooked extremities 25 of a substantially U-shaped keeper 26 formed preferably of a single length of spring wire, the bight of the keeper straddling the upper length 15 of the clothes line as shown. Should the sheave 18 become detached from the hook 19, or should the hook 19 become broken off, the clothes line would still be held by the keeper 26 and detachment of the line from the window prevented.

Should it be desired to close the shutters while the clothes line is in use, the legs of the spring keeper are spread apart with a resultant disengagement of the keeper from the screw pin 21. The keeper may now be detached from the clothes line and as above stated the sheave 18 may be bodily removed from the hook 19 and engaged upon the hook 20. The keeper may then be again applied to the screw pin and will be in readiness for use when again required.
