tick, ,in the eou'nty'of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention, hav- `ing reference to the Manufacture of Hats, or various other articles composed` of felt or cloth; and do hereby declare the same" to be fully described, as follows:

Instead of such grooves' the block may lhe 'recessedon its surface.

Instead of the flat board, covered with sand or e111-- ery-covered paper, the grinding or reducing material may be used on a moderately pliable article, such as paper orpasteboard, or,-in place of Such means of reducing the cloth, a grinding-stone or wheel, or a rasp or 'le may be used. j f

Before subjecting the'hat-body to the action of the scored or recessed block and a grinding implement, as described, the outer'snrface of the hat-body may he dyed or .colored a different color from the 'rest of the body, and thisfsuperficial color may be ground on" over the parts c of the block, whereby spots of different color will be representedas boundedA by the superficial;

I claim as my invention- The above -vdescribed method of ornamenting a hatbody, or article of like character, suchV involving the employment of a. grooved or recessed block and a 4grinder or abrading material, in'manner substantially as specified. v i .l
