To all whom it may concern V Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. LENNOX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable wrench, wherein positive and reliable means are employed, as hereinafter set forth, for locking the adjustable jaw of the wrench in a fixed position relatively to the shank of the wrench.
Another object of this invention is to provide a nut wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted and safely used without any danger of the wrench slipping upon a nut.
A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture.
The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with the handle plate thereof removed, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the wrench, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of locking means.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawing, like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denoting a shank that is rectangular in cross section and has the outer end thereof provided with an integral jaw 2 presenting a gripping surface 3 at right angles to the front side of the shank 1. The inner end of the shank 1 is reduced, as at 1 and the front side thereof provided with a rectangular frame 5. The frame 5 has transverse partitions 6, 7 and 8, the partitions 7 and 8 being cut away, as at 9 to provide clearance for a rectangular stem 10 that has the outer end thereof provided with an integral jaw 11, said jaw confronting the aw 2 and having a flat gripping surface 12 adapted to cooperate with the gripping surface 3 of the jaw 2 in engaging the facets of a nut. The stem 10 extends into the frame 5 and the front side of said stem has transversely arranged and equally spaced grooves 13, corresponding to threads, the object of which will presently appear.
14 denotes a strap embracing the stem 10 of the jaw 11, said strap having the ends thereof mounted in the shank 1 and secured thereto by screws 15 or other fastening means. The sides of the strap 1a are flush with the sides of the shank 1.
16 and 17 denotes transverse bars that are secured to the frame 5' by screws 18 or other fastening means, said bars being countersunk in the frame 5 and in inner end of the shank 1. These bars retain the stem 10 within the cut away portions of the partitions 7 and 8, said bars cooperating with the strap 14 in properly holding the stem 10 relatively to the shank l.
19 denotes a rod that is revolubly mounted in the partitions 6, 7 and 8, the outer end of said rod having a washer 20 and a transverse pin 21, both of which are located in a recess 22 provided therefor in the partition 8. The inner end of the rod 19 has a thumb piece 23 and said head cooperates with the washer 20 and the pin 21 in retaining the rod within the partitions 6, 7 and 8. The thumb piece or head 23 is located in the open end of the frame 5 and the thumb or finger can be easily placed in engagement with the head 23 to shift or rotate the rod 19.
24 denotes a nut that is mounted upon the rod 19, between the partitions 7 and 8, said nut being retained upon the rod 19 by a transverse pin 25. The threads of the nut 24 are adapted to engage the threaded or grooved portion 18 of the stem 10, and said nut has a flat face 26, which when confronting the stem 10, permits of said stem being moved relatively to the nut.
27 denotes handle plates that are riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of the frame 5 to close said frame.
The reference numeral 28 denotes a nut that is eccentrically mounted upon a rod 29 having a handle 80. This nut obviates the necessity of providing a flat face whereby the stem 10 can be freely moved, as it is only necessary to rotate the rod 29 whereby the nut will be moved out of engagement with said stem. Instead of mounting the nut upon the rod 29, the end of the rod can be mounted in the nut and then the top of the nut provided with a pintle 31.
While I have herein referred to the partitions 6, 7 and 8 for supporting the rod 19,
or release the stem 10 of the jaw 11, and with-the stem 10 released, the jaw 11 can be quickly adjusted relatively to the jaw 2. By
then rotating the rod 19, the adjustable jaw 11 can be locked relatively to the shank 1.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:- A wrench comprising a shank having an integral jaw, a rectangular frame integral I with and projecting inwardly and laterally from the inner end of said shank, said frame of greater thickness than the thickness of the shank and formed with a handle, the inner end of said frame provided with a pocket, transverse partitions arranged within said frame, a rod extending through the rear end of the frame and through said partitions and to one side of the center thereof, a stem opposing said shank and extending into said frame, straps for holding the stem and shank together, a head carried by said rod and arranged in said pocket, and means mounted upon the rod and adapted to engage the 'stem for locking the stem from movement.
