Description
initrri tairz atrnt Wire Letters Patent No. 104,583, d'atel June 21, 1870.
IMPRovED BUGGY-SEA'I'.
1 The Soheduleireferred to in these Letters Patent and making part ol the s'ame.
To alt whom it 'may conccrn:
Beit known that I, GHnIsrIAN' Hans, of Chicago, in the 'county'of Cook and in the State of Illia nois, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear, .and exact'descrip-` tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings and to 'the letters of reference marked thereon. i
The nature of my invention consistsin constructin'g the seats of a buggy so that' accommodation can easilybe provided to seat four persons, by simply unfolding the compactly folded seats when arranged for seating two persons, as will more fully hereinaftcr appear. `To enable others skilled in the art to .make and use my invention, I will now deseribe itsconstruction'and operation.
In the drawingsi Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the seats when folded in the position to seat two persons; FigureZ is a frontend view, representing the position the seats occnpy when arranged for four persons, and showing, by dotted lins, the manner ofshorteniug the front seat preparatory to adapting the seats for' the use of only two persons;`
Fignre' is a cross-sectional viewjthrough the line :v y iu fig. 2, clearly showing the position of the scats,- adjusted to accommodate the seating of four persons; andi i Figure 4 is a detali view of the front seat, showing .one end of it hortened, so as to allow of ,its being swung down to prepare the seats for two persons, as shown in fig. 1, and the other end of this seat is'represented when it is to be used as shown in The body A. is .not constructed materially dilferent from'the buggy-bodies in present use.
B is the seatused when. but4 two persons are driving, and is the back or rear seat when the two seats are used.` i
.the eye-bolts c', on platesG', with the rods D, as shown in fig. 2.
There are four rods 'Dand four braces E,two of each being secured on the rivet-bolts b, near the rear, and twoof each on the rivet-bolts b, near the front side of seat B. v'By means of these rods and braces, the seat B is moved into the position shown in fig. 1, to accomo- (late two persons, or moved back to the position shown in fi'g. 3, when it is desired to accomlnodate four persons. i
Whenthc seat B is occupying the position shown in fig. 1, it rests upon the. cross-brace F, macie of Wood, and a projection, (l, which fits` in a corresponding recess in seat B, gives additional steadiness to the said seat.
iTh'e seat G'is only used when the other seat B.
does not aiford suiiicientaccommodation.
On the under side, and .near the'ends of this seat G,- are secured plates H, each provided with an eyebolt, g, (see fig. 3,) through which a bolt, hf, passes, securing it to the body A. The rear side of this' seat Vis supported on the bolts 71', and the front side by cross-brace F.
Seat G has its ends terminated by movable blocks J and J, which `are hinged or se'cured by similar and suitable means, by which means the blocks J are turned np, as shown in fig. 2, by the dotted lines, and thns shortening the length of the seat G.
At each end of this seat is fitted a movable or sliding metallic band, 'that fits the end and side' edges, as shown iu fig. 4;.that part of 'the band which fits the edges of the seat G, and marked Z, has a slot, which slides upon two bolts c, secpred to the edge of'seat G, and'by which means the metallic hands or slidesl L are drawn out, so, as to rest upon the sides of the buggy-'body A, when it is necessary to use seat G, and serves to prevent this seat from swinging backward, iu the ,samewsubstantial mauner that the cross-brace F supports this seat, G, in front, as shown in figs. 2 and 3, and prevents it from swinging forward.
VVhen seat G is lnot wanted, by turning up blocks J to the position shown infig. 2, by the dotted lines, and pushing slides L up close to the block J, as shown in the same fig. 2, the seat can be turned back and down till it oceupies the position indicated in fig. 1; that is, entirely and compactly out of the way of seat B, when but two persons are driving'.
My inveution is thns seen to be of simple'and cheap construction, as well as' light, compact, dnrable, and elegant, and thus seeuring the several most importaut and dcsirable features in the class of two-seatcd buggies to which my invention belongs.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new 'and `desire to secure by Lettcrs Patent, isi 1. The movable seat G, with slides L L, adjust- I'n testimony that I olaim the above-described able blocks J J, plates' H H, and boltsh h, in oomcertain new and usefulimprovements in buggybination' with cross-piece F, eonstrncted substztnt-iaily seats, I have hereunto signed my name this 15th as described, and Operating .as and for the purposes day of January, 1869. set fort-11. i OHRISTIAN HAAS.
2. The seat B,-8;s deseribed, in combination with the seat G, when usedias an'adj ustable seat for buggies Witnesses: and carriages, Operating as and for the purposes set HENRY ARNOLD, forth. AUGUs'r BRIBAOH.
