To an whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS P. GIBnoNs, of the fi-ity and countyof Philadelphia and State of Penn w sylvania,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw-- ing forming a part of this specification, in which.-

a This invention consists in a metallic collar, provided with an inwardly-projecting flange at its lower end, in

combination with an outwardly-projecting flange on the head of a fruit-jar, in such manner that, by two is prevented from being removed while there is no obstruction to slipping the collar down on the neckof the jar, for convenience The invention also consists in-incliued slots cut in .the metallic collar aforesaid, in combination with a bar whose ends extend through the slots, and which is placcd above the cover of the jar, and which, when turned on its vertical axis in the slots, is, by the in- -clination of the same, forced downward upon the cover and made to hold it ti Finally, thei'uveutioncousistsinadianietricalgroove cut in the upper surface of the cover, in which groove ithe aforesaid bar is placed, in combination with ears on the cover',by which ears andgroo e the bar is the inore readily turned for the purpose of tightening the ,In the drawinga is the fruit-jar.

By means. of'the two'flanges band (I, the collar 0 is slipped down so as to be out'of the ray when filling. The jar being filled, the collar 0 is drawn upward until the flanges-b d are in contact, the cover h is placed on the topof the jar upon the packing; the bar f is collar is held by the application of the other hand to the ears hand the bar f is forced down upon the cover by the inclined slots astightly as desired. The jarmay be readily opened by turning the cover back.
