principal object of the same is to provide ay brush having a casing which will inclose the bristles of the brush, and which will act as a handle for the brush when the brush is in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a brush of the type described in which there is provided an improved type of means for locking the bristles either in an extended position o-r within the casing.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the casing and brush that under normal conditions the bristles will be prevented from being entirely withdrawn from the casing, but to permit the brush to be removed from the casing if the bristles be come worn, thus permitting` a new brush to be provided without it being necessary to obtain a new case every time a new brush is needed.

ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the casing with the brush within the casing. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the casing with the brush moved to the outer position, the dotted lines indicating the position of the lock when the brush is in the outer position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, the dotted lines indicating the manner in which the brush may be removed from the casing. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the brush. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the brush. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of holding the brush within the casing.

Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that this invention comprises a casing 10 which is hollow and has one of its side walls provided with a cut-out portion 11 and has its end walls provided with the inwardly extending lips 12. This casing forms a receptacle for the brush so that the brush will be protected and be prevented. from taking up too much room and will also act as a handle for the brush when the brush is in use.

The brush comprises the back 13 in which the bristles 14 are placed, a strip 15 being placed in the back upon the bristles and the teeth 1G carried by the side walls 17 of the back being bent in between the bristles as shown in Fig. 4, so that the strip 15 will be held in place and thus the bristles firmly secured to the back and held in their proper position. This back 13 is of such length that its end portions extend slightly bef yond the end bristles and when in the case these end portions will tit beneath the lips 12 as shown in Fig. 3, thus limiting the outward movement of the brush, and thus normally preventing the brush from being entirely withdrawn from the casing. It will be noted however, that when it is desired to remove the brush in order to provide a new one that the brush may be tilted as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3 and thus easily removed.

A crescent shape plate 18 has its ends pivotally mounted between the pivot ears 19 extending from one of the side walls 17 of the back 13 and is provided with an opening 20 located intermediate at a point adjacent its center. A latching plate 21 is pivotally mounted between the pivot ears 22 and is provided with a lug 23 which holds the brush in a locked position. When this brush is positioned within the casing as shown in Fig. 1, the latching plate 21 is t-urned flat upon the side of the casing and the lug passes through the opening 24 formed in the side of the casing and through the opening 20 formed in the crescent plate 18, thus securely holding the brush within the casing. When it is desired to use the brush the latching plate is moved outwardly and is then grasped and may be used to draw the brush to the extended position shown in Fig. 2. The plate 18 is then moved down upon the side of the casing as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the lug 23 will then pass into the opening 25 thus securely holding the brush in the extended position. From inspection of Fig. 5 it will also be evident that when this brush is in use that the iingers will engage the plate 18 thus acting as additional securing means for the plate and preventing any danger of the lug 23 slipping out of the opening 25 and thus permitting the brush to move inwardly while in use.

It will thus be seen that there has been provided a brush which may be carried in a casing protecting the bristles from exposure to dust and dirt and also preventing the brush from taking up too much room. This will permit the brush to be easily carried in the pocket or carried in a suit-case While traveling. It will also be seen that the casing Which holds the brush forms a handle for the brush when in use.

Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is:-

A device of the character described comprising a casing, a brush slidably mounted in said casing, means for limiting the outward movement of said brush, a plate piv otally connected with said brush and provided With an opening registering with an opening formed in said casing When said brush is in a closed position, and a latching plate pivotally connected With said rst mentioned plate and provided with a lug adapted to pass through the alined openings of said first mentioned plate and casing to hold said brush Within said casing and to be passed through a second opening formed adjacent the back of said casing to hold said brush in an extended position.
