IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

iThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making peut of the" same.

Be it known that I, J oHN DAVID CHAMBERS, .of Williamsport, in the county of Warren and in the State of 'Indiana, have invented certain new and useful vImprovements iu Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,"and exact description thereof, reference beingvhad to the accompanying ldrawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specilication. y g

rlhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe opening and closing apparatus for a gate, as willfbe hereinafter fully 4set forth.v i

In order to enableothersskilled lin the art to whichm'y invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, in which'- Figure l is aperspective view of the gate, with the. opening and closing apparatus attached; and

. Figure 2is a side, view of the inner end of the, gate,

showing the manner of hinging the same.r

In the gate A is pivoted a horizontal bar, C, provided at its'inner end, nearthe pivot point, with a vertical lever, D,ithentwo together forming arightangle latch.

The upper end of thel lever D is, by two wires', a' a, connected with a double-armed lever, E, which is pivoted on an inclined bar, G,`risingfrom the gate, the

.pivot point of said doublearmed lever being above the post to `which the gate Iis hinged.

The handlevers H H are pivoted at or about their center, and the wires b b are attached at their lower ends. Their upper ends are connected by another wire, L a p Y The outer gate-post is provided with a hook or catch on which the outer,end of the latch C D catches, and, at a suitable distance from the inner gate-post, is a smaller post, J, with hook', on which the gate latches to holdit open.-

The operation of this mechanism will be readily seen. By. the4 use of the handle-levers H H the rightangle latch C D is released or removed'from itshook or catch, and, from the .peculiar position of the doublearmed lever E, above and in rear of the gate-hinges, the gate is swung around. i

I do not claim under this patent the mode of hinging the gate to the post B, as seen in lig. 2.

What I claim, is i lhe arrangement of the gate A with angular latch C D, cords a a, T-shaped lever E, cord or wire b, levers H H pvoted to the beveled tops of the posts I I, and' the top cord or wire d, all as set forth. f.
