To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. VAN ZAND'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas-burners and more particularly to means such as set forth in the United States Letters Patent No. 838,596, granted to me December 18, 1906, and in. United States Letters Patent No. 876,507, granted to me January 1 1, 1908, and this invention relates more particularly to means for bringing about a more. perfect combustion of gas, and of the products of combustion of an initial burner.
The object of the invention is to provide a shell having closed ends and with separate upwardly and inwardly inclined draft inlets, and at the top with a vent-opening,
whereby the products of combustion retained by the shell are burned at the exterior of the opening.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my im-' proved burner, Fig. 2 is an end-view of the same, partly in section, Fig. 3 is a detail view of a different vent-opening, Fig. 4 is a detail view of a still different vent-opening, Fig. 5 is a detail view of a still different vent-opening, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a modification of the burner shown in Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the pipe 5 is connected with a suitable reservoir of gas (not shown) and has connected thereto a suitable burner 6 of approved form, preferably of the Bunsen type, having an airmixing device 3. A horizontally disposed shell or container 7, having closed ends, completely surrounds the initial burner 63, and has a downwardly-extending flange 16, resting on struts 17, suit-ably supported on the pipe 5. The shell or container is of tubular shape having its central portion hollowed out, as shown by 15, to permit the unimpeded flow of the flame. The shell is hollowed out at the central portion as stated, so as to be larger in transverse dimension at that port-ion than at the remaining portions of the shell. The top of the shell or container is provided with a vent-opening 9, which may be of V-shape, with a deflecting plate 19 above it-secured in position by screws 20, as shown in Fig. 2.
The modified form of burner-shell 7 shown in Fig. 3 is provided with a ventopening 9 having parallel side walls, but is not provided with a deflecting plate. In the form of burner-shell 7 shown in Fig. 4, the vent-opening 9 is V-shaped in cross-section and no deflecting plate is provided. The burner-shell 7 shown in Fig. 5 has a plurality of vent-openings 9, while the burner shown at 7 of Fig. 6 is provided with a vent-opening 9 having parallel side walls and is also provided with a deflecting plate 19.
The bottom of the shell or container 7 is provided with openings 14, of substantial size, and in the embodiment shown in the drawing is provided with inclined surfaces 17, which openings act to bring about a draft through the shell of the container. The transverse sections of the opening 14, in the embodiments shown in the drawing, are preferably substantially circular in shape.
The invention, therefore, consists in providing a shell or container over and around an initial gas-burner, in such a manner as to have ample inflow of air, and an outflow of such size as to take care of the combustible gases passing out of the top of the shell or container.
The invention consists of a gas-burner having an initial burner, a cylindrical shell over said initial burner for retaining the products of combustion about the initial burner, said shell being provided at the bottom portion with an inlet opening and in addition thereto with separate upwardly and inwardly inclined draft inlets, and at the top portion with a vent opening whereby egress of the combustible gases is permitted but so retarded that the emanating gases are caused to burn at the exterior of the shell. And the invention consists in providing the central portion of the shell with a hollowed out portion so as to be larger in transverse dimension at that portion than at the remaining portions of the shell; and the invention consists lastly in providing the shell with a downwardly extending cylindrical open-ended flange having a diameter less than the length of. the cylindrical shell.
I have shown several embodiments of my invention, but I do not wish to limit my self to the details thereof, since changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as new:
1. In a gas-burner having an initial burner, a cylindrical shell over said burner for retaining the products of combustion about the initial burner, said shell being provided at the bottom-portion with an inlet-opening and in addition thereto with separate upwardly and inwardly inclined draft inlets and at the top-portion with a vent-opening, whereby egress of the combustible gases is permitted but so retarded that the emanating gases are caused to burn atthe exterior of the shell.
2. In a gas-burner, the combination of a cylindrical shell provided at the top portion with a vent-opening and at the bottomportion with an inlet opening and in addition thereto with separate upwardly and inwardly inclined draft inlets, the ends of the cylindrical shell being closed, and an initial burner in said shell.
3. In a gas-burner, the combination of a cylindrical shell provided at the topportion with a vent-opening and at the bottom with an inlet opening and with separate draftinlets having upwardly and inwardly inclined sides, the lateral ends of the shell being closed, and an initial burner in said shell and adapted to discharge its products 5. In a gas-burner, the combination of a 7 horizontal cylindrical shell closed at its side and end walls and provided at the top-portion with a vent-opening and at the bottom-portion with upwardly and inwardly inclined inlet-openings and with a downwardly-extending cylindrical open-ended flange having a diameter less than the length of the cylindrical shell, a plate disposed over said vent-opening, and an initial burner within said flange and shell.
6. In a gas-burner, the combination of a shell forming a chamber having a ventopening and an inlet opening and an initial burner within said shell, and adapted to direct its flame against said shell at its central portion, said shell being hollowed out at said central portion so that said portion 7 has a larger internal transverse dimension than the remaining portion of the shell. 7
