RALPH EVANS, FORT DODGE, IOWA.
SELF-CLEANING GURRYCOMB.
To all whom it" may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Currycombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a curry comb and more especially to an improved curry comb of the self-cleaning type.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel form of cleaning member with means for holding the same engaged over the teeth of the comb, said means also serving to shift the said member over the teeth to remove the dirt and hair therefrom upon release of the holding means.
Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the plate in an open position. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cleaner plate removed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a back plate 10 having a handle member 11 secured thereto and extended rearwardly, said back plate 10 having U- shaped plates 12 secured at spaced distances transversely of its underface and provided with toothed extremities 13 over which my improved plate is adapted to pass. This plate comprises a cleaner member formed of a single section of wire 14 of a contour similar to that of the back plate or rectangular formation and having its forward end port-ions pivotally attached to the front U- shaped plate as shown at 15 by means of ears secured thereto while its end portions terminate in loops 16 adapted to engage eyes 17 at the forward end adjacent to the sides of the back plate 10 to limit the movement of the cleaner plate to an open position. A series of plates in the form of strips 17 are secured to the sides of the wire frame through the medium of their rebent end portions 18, said strips being spaced apart Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 10, 1911.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912. Serial No. 643,389.
for receiving the leg portions of the U- shaped toothed plates and having flanged portlons 19 adapted to snugly engage against the opposite faces of the toothed plates to clean the dirt and hair therefrom when the cleaner plate is shifted to an open position.
A coiled spring 20 is anchored intermediate its ends as shown at 21 to an eye carried by the back plate and has its forward end connected to a loo-p 22 formed centrally in the forward end of the wire frame while its opposite end is connected to a catch member 28. This catch member is formed of a single section of wire having a loop portion 24 disposed adjacent to the shank of the handle and below which the spring is connected, the catch being curved and pivotally attached to a pin 25 secured in eyes 26 spaced apart and mounted upon the rear toothed plate so that the extremity 27 or engaging portion of the catch beyond its point of engagement with the pin around which it is twisted, projects below the said plate to engage the outwardly bulged portion 28 of the rear end of the wire frame and thus holds the said cleaner plate in a closed position. 7
In the operation of the device with the parts thus engaged, the loop portion of the catch is in a forward position and in order to release the cleaner plate, the operator grasps the handle in the usual manner and presses his thumb forwardly of the loop portion and presses rearwardly thereon to swing the engaging end of the catch downwardly beyond the bulged portion of the wire frame and as the flanged strips are drawn in an open position by the coiled spring at the opposite extremity thereof, the hair and dirt is removed from the teeth.
The device is simple in construction, efficient in operation and economical to manufacture.
1. In a curry-comb, the combination with a back plate and spaced toothed plates carried thereby; of a wire frame pivotally secured to the back plate at its forward end, cleaner plates carried by the wire frame to engage over the toothed plates, means to hold said frame in a closed position and means to move the same to an open position upon releasal of the last mentioned means, said last mentioned means being held in engaged position by the first mentioned means.
2. In a self-cleaning curry comb, a back plate, a handle therefor, U-shaped toothed plates secured transversely to the underface of the back plate and spaced apart, a Wire frame pivotally attached to the forward toothed plate and havin looped end portions, projections upon the back plate engaged by said looped portions to limit the movement of the wire frame to an open position at right angles to the back plate, flanged strips having rebent end portions secured to the sides of the frame and spaced apart to receive the toothed plates in snug engagement, a catch pivotally mounted upon the rear toothed plate and adapted to engage a bulged portion of the frame ad- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
open position when the catch is released.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
