To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. Dow, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Whip Locks and Sockets, 0 which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in whip looks.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a whip locking socket from which it will be impossible for anyone except the aiilthorized person or persons to remove the w 1 A iiother object of the invention is to rovide means in the socket which will roect the whi therefrom when the loc 'ng means are re eased.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and with particular-reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a whip locking socket formed in accordance with m invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudina section theretnrough, Fig. 3 is a. vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a modification. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the butt end of an ordinary whip adapted for my socket.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the whip socket, to one side of WhlCh is secured the lock receiving chamber 11. In the bottom of the whip socket is secured a coil spring 12 adapted to be compressed by the downward movement of the butt end of a whip, when inserted in the socket. The ferrule 14 is secured to the butt end of the whip, and has on its lower end the circumferential oove 15, the purpose of which will be ater referred to.
Arranged in the chamber 11 in a vertical position, and pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 16, is a lever 17, the lower end of which extends laterally, as at 18, and projects through an opening 19, in the adjacent wall of the whip socket 10, this extension being adapted to on age in the groove 15 of the ferrule, when t e whip is pressed down into the socket to compress the spring, and securely hold the w ip from vertical movement therefrom. between the wall of the whip socket, and the lever, to hold it in normal position with its projection or extension 18 projecting through the opening in the wall of the socket. The u er end of the lever 17 is formed with a lfurcation, which is adapted to be en a ed by the reduced end 21 of the detac 1a le operating stem 22. The upper end of the stem 22 has a button 23 by means of which the said stem may be pushed inwardly toward the whip socket. Secured on the upper end of the lever 17 is a spring finger 24 for engagement in a notch 25 in the lower end of the operating stem 22, whereby when the stem is engaged with the lever said stem and lever act as a sin le unit, so that when the same is pressed by means of the button, the extension 18 is withdrawn from the opening 19, to release the whip. The result of such an operation is: The whip being released, the spring will expand and throw the whip upwardly from the socket.
The ferrule 14 is formed of two parts, the part 14' being a tapered tube open at the up or end and slipped on from the butt end 0 the whip, and fitted snugly thereon, while the part 15 is a screw cap having the screw 25 adapted to engage 1n the interiorly threade lower end of the ferrule, thereby holdin the arts to the whip.
Extending t rough the lower end of the lock receiving chamber is a cam disk 26, having secured at its opposite ends and engaging on the opposite outer walis of the chamber, the flat rings or washers, 27 and 28, the plate 27 having a keyhole slot for the reception of the key 29, whereby the disk may be turned to enga s with the rear face of the lower end of the ever 17, to hold the extension 18 within the socket 10, and in engagement with the groove in the cap of the ferrule.
When it is desired to lock the whip, the whip is forced downwardly so as to compress the s ring, and bring the groove 15 opposite t e extension 18 so as to cause an en- Eagement therebetween. The whip will thus e held in the socket, and upon removal of the operating stem, it will be impossible for any instrument to be inserted into the chamber to operate the lever, to release the whip. By means of the key and cam disk it is possible to insure against any movement, whatever, of the lever 17, should an attempt be made to operate the same from the upper end. If desired, I may dispense with the disk and key, and simply rely on the fact that the stem is removable to insure against removal of the whip.
Referring particularly to Fig. 5, the ferrule 14 has a chamber 30 in its lower portion, in which is ivotally mounted the release lever 31. This lever has on its upper end a button 23, by means of which it may be operated to release its 0 posite turned end 32 from the groove 33 in the post 34,
secured in the lower end of the whip socket.
The bottom wall of the ferrule has a central opening 35 to permit said post to project within the ferrule when the whip is pushed down into the socket. A slot 36, in the upper edge of the socket permits the button portion of the lever to pass when the whip is withdrawn from the socket.
As represented in Fig. 6, the ordinary whip may be formed with a groove 37. In this way the manufacturer of the present form of whips can easily and with very little added cost form the groove which will adapt the ordinary whip to my socket lock.
What is claimed is:
1. A whip lock com )rising a socket, a spring in the socket, a whip for compressing tie spring, said whip having a circumferential shoulder, a lever pivoted at one side of the socket, a lateral projection for engagement with the shoulder when the spring is com ressed, fureations on the up )er end of the ever, means for locking the lever in engaged position, and an operating stem for detachable engagement between the said furcations, whereby when said stem is Copies of this patent may be obtained for pressed the lever will release the whip and permit the spring to project the same from the socket.
2. A whip lock comprising a whip socket, a lock holding receptacle at one side of the socket, and. communicating with the whip socket, said receptacle being open at its up per end, a lever pivoted 1n the receptacle and having its end projecting into the socket for engagement with the butt of a whip, a sprin in the socket to project the whip thereii-om, a removable operating stem for engagement. with one end of said lever, and means on the lever for detachable engagement with said stem.
3. A whip lock comprisin a socket for the reception of a whip, spring means for com iession by the whip, a pivoted lever for llOlt ing the whip within the socket, the upper end of the lever being bifurcated, a spring finger on the lever, a detachable stem having means for engagement in the l ifur-- cation and a depression for engagement by the linger to hold the stem to said lover, a spring for normally forein the lever into operative position, and a lhcking cam cnaging the pivoted lever, whereby when said ocking cam is turned in one direction, and said stem removed from the lever. the whip cannot be removed from the socket.
