Be it known that we, WARREN M. MEANS and NICOLA C. CELMO, citizens of the United States, residing at Putneyville, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Switch-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locks for switches or the like.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a lock for switches, which will automatically engage the switch arm or lever and lock the same against unauthorized tampering, but which may be thrown into an inoperative position so as to allow the free movement of the said switch arm or lever if desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a key actuated locking means for switch arms, having a locking bolt designed to engage the said switch arm or lever, the said bolt cooperating with a suitable key, whereby the same can be removed from its locking position by one movement of the key, and by a second movement of the key, in a different direction, retain the looking bolt in inoperative position.
A further object ofthe invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the certain novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 1

tion of a switch arm or lever, having the usual hand grip 6 formed upon one end thereof, and a recess 6 formed in one side.
Our improved latch 7, consists of a base plate 8, formed in its opposite edges with notch-es 9 to engage fastening devices (not shown in the drawings) whereby the said latch 7 can be held in operative position.
A. perpendicular block or body portion extends from the base plate 8, and is indicated by the numeral 10.
The usual notch -11 is provided in this body portion 10, and is designed to receive the switch arm 5.
A. groove 12 is formed in the body portion, and leads into the notch 11, at right angles thereto, and in spaced relation from the bottom thereof. A locking bolt is slidable in this groove 12 and is shown at 13. This bolt 13 is. forced normally to the position shown inFigs. 1 and 2, by a spring 14, disposed within said groove 12, and contacting with the shoulder 15 of the locking bolt 13, and plate 16, positioned within the transversely offset extensions 17 of the said groove 12.
The bolt 13, and spring 14, are held in position within the groove 12, by the plate 18, while the said groove 12 is offset at 19 forming a key passage in which is located the operating finger 20, of the said bolt 13. The plate 18 is provided with a key-way 21, through which can be inserted the key 22. The shank of the key 22, engages the bearing recess 23, in which the key can be rotated to engage the finger 20, and retract the locking bolt 13, when the said key is rotated, thereby releasing the lever or arm 5.
When the key has been turned sufliciently to retract the bolt 13 and release the arm or lever 5, a forward movement of the key causes the lug 2a to enter the recess 25,
of the lever or arm 5 thereagainst will auto niatically throw the same inwardly, permitting the said arm to pass below the latch in order that the latter will engage the notch 6 in the said arm 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, locking the same against any unauthorized tampering.
Having thus fully described this invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a locking device for switch arms, a block having a notch formed therein, a looking bolt movable at right angles to said notch, said bolt operating in a groove provided in said block, a shoulder provided on said locking bolt, a pin extending transversely of the groove, a spring engaging said pin and shoulder, said block having a recess formed therein in communication with the groove, a finger formed on said locking bolt and extending into the groove, an operating member removably located in said recess and rotatable in the path of said finger, a lug formed on said operating member, and said block having a recess therein to receive the lug of the operating member upon longitudinal movement of the latter whereby the locking bolt will be retained in inoperative position.
