To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Means for Buttons and Badges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

In many labor organizations, the various unions require the members of the union each to obtain a monthly button or badge evidencing the continued good standing of the member in such union. Such buttons or badges are required to be worn or ex-' hibited during the month upon the clot-hing 0r cap of the member, and at the end of the month a new button or badge is issued and the old button thrown away or destroyed. This entails considerable waste, as the entire structure is discarded. The object of this invention is to afiord an attaching device adapted for use in connection witha button top, to removably engage the same upon the clothing without the necessity of removing the attaching means or pin from the clothing and enabling any desired button top of a standard size, tobe immediately secured in place in lieu thereof, if desired.

As shown in thedrawings: 1, indicates the button top constructed of pressed or stamped metal by means of a suitable die, and, as shown, circular in form, and with a convex top portion, and secured thereto and covering the same is a sheet of celluloid or other suitable material 2, through which may be seen the picture, character or design secured beneath the same over the button top. The integral peripheral flange of the top portion inclines inwardly toward its free edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, and the free margin 3', thereof is rolled or turned over the celluloid covering rigidly binding the same in place.

The attaching means comprises a metallic plate 4, pressed or stamped to a size to fit within the flange of the button and convex on its outer side, and provided with an upturned peripheral flange 5, which fits closely within said flange. Also pressed or stamped from said plate near the front edge thereof, is a downwardly struck hook 6, for engaging the pin and on each side thereof adjacent said hook is an upwardly and outwardly inclined flange 7, which engages within the flange of the button top, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7 The pin 8, is bent at its inner end at a right-angle with the body of the pin, as indicated by 9, in Fig. 4, and the end 10, thereof is turned outwardly and inwardly through an aperture in said plate 4, and the pin engaged in place on said plate by means of an eye 11, provided therefor integral with the plate 4, and at the opposite side thereof from the hook 6. The body of the pin is bent adjacent said eye wherein the pin is hinged so that when the pin is closed in the hook 6, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, the inner end 10, of the pin engages within the flange of the body top and oppositely flanges 7, of the attaching plate within the flanges of the button top and then'closing the in and engagin the same upon its hook 6, w ereupon said flanges 7, and the end of the pin 10, lock the button top firmly in place. If desired, a portion of the flange of the button top may be turned downwardly and shaped to afford a hook 12, as shown in Fig. 7, together with a hook 6, engaged by said pin and acting to secure the button or badge top from any rotational movementon the attaching means.

The operation is evident from the foregoing description. The attaching means may, of course, be constructed of material of any desired or suitable quality or kind, as may also the button top, and the same may obviously be made for use in connection with articles of jewelry as well as for the purposes hereinbefore described. When it is desired to detach the button, badge or article previously attached in place, the pin is merely released from its hook, permitting the attaching plate to swing outwardly with reference to its pin, and the top portion to be lifted away therefrom. Another button top, badge or the like may be secured in place on the attaching plate without removing the pin from the clothing, and closed and 'firmly engaged'in place when the device is closed and the pin engaged upon its hook.

Of -course, it is to be understood that de tails of the construction may be varied. I have described but one (and that a preferred) form of my invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent to be granted on this application for patent otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. Attaching means of the class described embracing a plate having a hook on one side thereof near its edge and one or more flanges adjacent-thereto on the other side thereof, and extendin obliquely outward therefrom, a pin hinged at the other edge of the plate from the hook and adapted for engagement therewith, and a portion of said pin extending through the plate and oppositely from said flange or flanges, and adapted. together .with said flanges to engagewithin a hollow button top to connect the same firmly therewith.

2. Attaching means of the class described embracing a. plate having a hook on one side thereof and flanges adjacent thereto on the other side'thereof and extending outwardly therefrom,.a pin hinged on the plate and adapted for engagement with said hook, and a portion of said pin extending through the plate and oppositely from said flanges, and adapted together with said flanges to engage within a hollow button top to c0n nect the same firmly therewith.

3. The combination with a button of the class described, of an attaching plate adapted for engagement on one side of the button, a hook on the outer side of the attaching plate, outwardly and obliquely directed projections, a pin hinged on the attaching plate oppositely from the hook and adapted for engagement therewith, the rear end of said pin extending through said attaching plate and acting as a lever to engage within the button oppositely from said. projections therein to afford an attachment for the attaching plate therein.

4. The combination with a button such as described of an attaching plate adapted to fill the rear side thereof, a hook on the outer side the attaching plate near one edge, a'

projection adjacent the hook adapted to engage within the button, and a pin hinged on the plate opposite from the hook, the rear end of said pin extending through said attaching plate to lock the attaching plate in place within the button when the pin is engaged upon its hook.

5. The combination with a button of the class described of a circular attaching plate adapted for engagement on the rear side of the button, a hook at one edge of the attachwardly and obliquely directed projections, one on each side of the hook, a pin hinged on the attaching plate oppositely from the hook and adapted for engagement therewith, the rear end ofsaid pin extending through the attaching plate and acting as a lever to engage within the button oppositely from said projections therein to afford a three point attachment for the attaching plate therein. a
