EINVELOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, LoUisii D. KonLHor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riedel, inthe county of Blaine and StateA ot Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in paper' receptacles and relates particularly to safety envclops for use in transmitting letters and the like through the mails.
The invention has for its primary object a siinple and eiiicientconstruction of device of this character which may be cheaply manufactured and which is so arranged that after it has .been once sealed, it cannot be opened without detection.y
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description 'and' accompanying' drawing in which, f
Figure l is a rear view of my improved envelop in sealed condition. Fig. 2is a similar view with the sealing iap open. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3 3, of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is an inside view of the blank out of which the envelop is formed, one of the end flaps being partially broken away.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig- 'nated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates the .face portion of my improved envelop, 2 the bottom iiap thereof and 3 the end ila-ps that are designed to be folded one upon the other from the bottonri'ap 2 after the lat-ter has been folded up upon the `face portion l, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
a designates the scaling flap.
In carrying out my invention, the sealing flap 4. is termed with two laterally spacer transversely extending incisions 5 ably disposed in parallel relation to ear-l:
other and icorirng end seiffiioiis ii.-
" the tongue, for a portion of its length,'w1ll Specification of Letters Patent.
The tongue or-tab section 7 of the sealing ratentefinov. 19, 1912.' Application filed May 29; 1912. Serial No. 700,507.
flap is designed to be passed back of the .bottom flap 2, thence outwardly through a slot 8 which is formed in such bottom sec tio-n near the upper `edge of the latter and` finally across the end aps 3-onto the adjoining portion of the outeii face of the bottom iiap '2, as clearly indica-ted in Figs. l and 3. The end iiaps 3 are provided on their inner faces and along' their margins with mucilage or other adhesive coa-ting, whereby they ing extending along one'side f the incisionsl 5, as indicated at 11, in Figs. 2 and 4. The tongue or tab section 7 is provided on its inner face and around its margin with an adhesive coating, as indicated at l2, said coating extending along the sides of said tongue to a point coincident with the coated portions 11.
In the use of an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention, after t-he contents have been inserted therein, the tongue 7 vis passed downwardly behind the upper edge of the'bottom flap 2 and thence -outwardly through the slot 8 and `is finally pressed upon the overlapping ends of the end iiaps 3, the extremity of said tongue overlying a portion of the bottoni flap 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The end sections o are pressed downwardly iipon the end aps 3 and the intermediate upper portion of the bottom ilap 2 above the inclined upper edge of the end flaps, it being understood that a the adhesive coatings of the tongue 'and end sections 6 of the Ceiling Hap have been previously moistened.
it is to be particularly noted, that when g.. 1 'i' and end sect-ions 6 are thus or caused to adhere to their underlying parts, the tongue not onlyv is secured adliesirely to the end aps 3, but is also secured to the bottoni flap 2, both below and above the adioining edges of the end flaps and it isa-lso to be noted that, owing to the extent of the marginal coat-ings oif the tongueA herein described' safety envelop, comprisi ed to be folded upon the end fla s and bottom flap, the sealing flap being ormed cenato tongue.7 said tongue projecting beyondA x. lireetly adhere to the letter ed inthe envelop, while., l 6 `will be adhesiyely conbottom ap .2 over the ends oit the slot 5%, "whereby said slot, while longer tbnnthe widthA of tbe tongue 7 and thereby enabling the tongue Ato be easily .sli ped through the slot, will be securely held rom splitting or tearing, after the envelop has once been sealed. Itwill thus be seen that I have provided a very secure safety envolop whichv cannot be opened surreptitiously without detection.
lV'bat I cle-im is As e .new article ot manufacture, the
ing a face portion, essentially .triangular overlapping end taps, a bottom tlap underlying sind end iaps and a sealing flap adapttrally of its ends with two parallel incisions opening upon the .tree edge of the flap and deiining two end sections, and :in intermedr the free edge of the sealing flap, the bottom :flap being formed adjacent its upper edge with alongitudinal slot through which the tongue is adapted to ass from behind the upper edge of said ottoni tlap, the end sections of the sealing flap and the sealing tongueubeing provided around their margi- 'nnl edges and along the sides of the 1ncisions with adhesive coatings whereby when the sealing flap is folded over upon the end flap and the bottom flap and the ton ue passed down behind the upper edge of tide bottom flap and thence outwardly through said slot, the said tongue may be caused to adhere to the letter within the envelop and also to the outer faces of the end flaps and the bottom flap, and whereby the end sections of the sealing fia may be caused to adhere to the outer aces of the bottom flap and end flaps 'and extend across the ends of the aforementioned slot. In testimony whereof I hereunto niix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
