Specification of Letters Patent.
,.atcnted Nov.t9,1912.
Application filed January 8, 1912. Serial No. 670.029.
,rfb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PORTER S. Hermien. a citizen of the United States, residing at i/Vausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined VBasinlfaucets and DrinkingFountains, of which the following is a specification, refer'- ence being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention is a combined basin faucet and drinking fountain and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device of this character which can be used both as a supply faucet for a wash basin or the like and as a drinking fountain and which is extremely cheap and simple in construction and operation, may he readily operated and regulated and is not likely to get out of order.
1n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of a combined basin faucet and drinking fountain constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line o o of Fig. 1.
The body 1 of the faucet may be of the construction here shown or of any other suitable construction and is illustrated as provided with the usual valve and the stem 2 having' the hand-wheel 3 for controlling the valve. From one side of the body of the faucet projects a spout member 4 which is integral therewith.
ln accordance with my invention provide an intermediate spout member 5 which is connected to the spout member 4l by coacting threaded portions 6 and an outer spout member 7 which also has threaded connection 8 with the intermediate spout member. The latter has a vertical bore 9 which intersects the bore of the spout and in which is a plug 10, mounted for rotation, which plug is provided with an inclined duct 11and is also provided with a transverse bore 12, which bore 12 may be put into and out of communication with the bore of the spout by partly turning the said plug. The plug is here shown as having an annular shoulder 13 seated on the upper side of the intermediate spout member and as provided at its lower end with a nut 14 which seats against the under side ot the intermediate spout member. V
The plug 10 is formed with a tubular handle 15 which extends upwardly and outH wardly therefrom and terminates at its outer end in a vertical portion 1G7 the upper end of the bore of which is covered by a closure 17 here shown as formed integral with the tubular handle, the said closure being` provided with a downwardly tapered medially disposed. outlet opening which also forms a valve seat 18.
A cap 19 is fitted on the upper end of the tubular handle 15. The base of the said cap is of cylindrical form and is provided with screw threads. The top of the cap is provided with a central threaded opening and also with openings 20, and in the sides of the upper portion of the cap are openings 9.1. A screw valve 22 has threaded engagei'nent with the central opening in the top of the cap and its lower end is tapered as at Q3 and disposed opposite the correspondingly shaped valve seat 18. The upper end of the screw valve is provided with a mushroom shaped head 24 which has upwardly converging discharge openings 25 and is also provided in its upper Side, at its center, with a kort 26 for engagement by a screwdriver, whereby the said screw valve may be adjusted as may be required to vary the effec-tive area of the opening in the valve seat 18 and hence control the supply of water to the drinking fountain. A cup QS of substantially inverted pear shape has threaded engagement with the cap 19 and its chamber 29 incloses and contains the screw valve 22 and also the upper portion of the cap. The top o t the cup is provided with a medially disposed depression 30 and also with a central opening 31 to which the center of the mushroom head of the screw valve is presented.
The operation of my invention is as follows. W'hen the tubular handle 15 is turned so as to dispose the bore 12 of the plug 1() transverse and out of communication with the spout 7 and to arrange the duct 11 in communication with the inner portion of the said spout, water from the body of the faucet passes upwardly through the said duct 11, through the tubular handle 15, the opening 1S in the cap 19 and issues from the latter through the openings 2O and 21 into the chamber 9.9 of the cup, filling the said chamber and also passing upwardly through l5 is turned to a position at right angles to the spout of the faucet, thereby cutting off the duct ll and putting the bore l2 of the plug into communication with the bore of the faucet spout so that water is discharged from the said spout as will be understood.
By providing the upwardly converging discharge opening 25, the water which vpasses through them serves to lift water that passes out between the head of the screw valve and the mouth of the opening 3l into a cone or bubble whereby the water may be easily taken into the mouth.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
l. A faucet having a turning plug provided with a tube extending therefrom and for communication with the discharge of the faucet, said tube having a closure at its upper end provided with an opening which also forms a valve seat, a cap on the upper end of said tube and having discharge openings above said closure, a valve screw carried by said cap and movable toward and from the valve seat, and a cup connected to said cap and providing a chamber in which the upper portion of the cap and the valve screw are located, the cup having a depression in its upper side and an opening leading to said depression.
2. A drinking fountain comprising a tube having a closure at its upper end provided with an opening which also forms a valve seat, a cap on the upper end of the tube and having discharge openings, a valve screw carried by said cap and movable toward and from the valve seat and a cup connected to said cap and providing a chamber in which the upper portion of the cap and the valve screw are located, the cup having a depression in its upper side and an opening leading to said depression.
3. A drinln'ng fountain comprising a tube having a closure at its upper end provided with an opening which also forms a valve seat, a cap on the upper end of the tube and having discharge openings, a valve screw carried by said cap and movable toward and from the valve seat, the said valve screw being provided with a mushroom shaped head, and a cup connected to said cap and providing a chamber in which the upper portion of the cap and valve screw are located, the cup having a depression in its upper side and an opening leading to said depression, the head of the valve screw being presented to the opening in t-he upper side of the cup and provided with discharge openings.
4. A faucet having a spout, a turning plug intersecting said spout and having a transverse bore and also provided with an inclined duct arranged at one side of and out of communication with the bore, the bore and the duct being adapted to be alternately arranged in communication with the bore of the spout, a tube leading from said plug and with which the said duct communicates, the said tube being provided at its outer end with an upturned portion terminating in a closure provided with an opening which also forms a valve seat, a cap on the upturned end of the tube and having discharge openings and forming a chamber above the upturned end of the tube with which said discharge openings communicate, a valve screw carried by the cap and movable toward and from the valve seat and a cup connected to the cap and in which the valve sc rew is located.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
