JEWS-HARP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN R. OoMns, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jews-Harps, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in musical instruments and has for its primary object a simple construction of jews-harp embody ing a sound box in which the reed is held at one end.

The invention is illustrated in the drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice; Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional views on the lines 2-2 and Sr-3 respectively of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an inverted detail perspective view of one of the sound box plates.

My improved jews-harp includes-a body portion 5 which is formed by a substantially circular head 5 and an attenuated mouth engaging portion 5. The portion 5 is provided with a longitudinal slot 5 which forms a continuation of the circular opening 5" in the head 5. A reed 6 is secured atone end by a set screw 10 in a recess 7 formed in one face of the head 5, said reed extending across the circular opening 5 and out into the slot 5*, the free end of the reed being angularly disposed as indicated at 6 and formed at its extremity with an enlargement 6 adapted to be engaged by the finger of the operator in the usual man ner.

To produce a sound box in which one end of the reed 6 is mounted, I secure to the opposite faces of the head 5, plates 10 which extend over and inclose the opening 5 of the head 5, the inner opposing faces of said plates being correspondingly recessed coextensive with the opening 5 as indicated at 11 and as best illustrated in Specification of Letters Patent.

One of the plates 10 is cut away at one side as at 14: and the recess thus formed is filled in by a segment 8 through which the set screw 10 passes, said segment being riveted to the head 5 as indicated at 9 and being designed, in connection with the set screw 10, to securely clamp the reed in position.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved jews-harp will be apparent. It is actuated in the ordinary manner and the pitch of the tones is varied by the mouth of the user of the instrument, the vibrations of the reed 6 setting up or producing air vibrations not only by the exposed portion of the reed but within the sound box in which the attached end of the reed is mounted.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

1. A jews-liarp, comprising a body portion embodying a head and an attenuated mouth portion, the head being formed with an opening and the mouth engaging portion with a slot communicating with said open ing, a reed mounted in said slot and extending into and across the opening of the head, means for securing one end of the reed to the head, and plates secured to the opposite faces of the head and covering the opening therein.

2. A jews-harp, comprising a sound box and an attenuated slotted portion extending from the sound box, the sound box having an opening communicating with one end of the slot of the said slotted portion, and a reed mounted in said slot and extending across the sound box and secured at one end therein.
