STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed. May 7, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO ERNsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a string musical instrument and has for its primary object to provide an instrument so constructed as to establish communication betweenaplurality of chambers of different capacities so as to increase the vibratory action of instrument.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for setting into vibration a plurality of different volumes of air which in turn set into vibration the surrounding atmosphere.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of an instrument constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the stringed instrument comprises a hollow main body 5, which may be of any desired shape and formation, a main sounding chamber 6, the body being connected with the usual neck 7 supporting the strings S which are connected to the tail piece 9 which is mounted upon the main body 5 at the usual point thereof, the top of the body 5 being formed with the usual sound opening 10 between the neck 7 and the tail piece 9 of the instrument.
Arranged within the sound chamber 6 of the main body 5 spaced from one corner Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Serial No. 695,763.
thereof is a vertical partition 11 which connects with the top and bottom walls of the said body providing an independent c0mpartment 12 with respect to the main sound chamber 6, and this compartment 12 opens into an auxiliary sound chamber 13 formed by the bottom of the chamber 6 and a supplemental bottom 14- fixed to the body 5 in any desirable manner, the supplemental body 14 being of a length and width corresponding to the main body 5 and similarly shaped thereto. The top wall of the main body 5 is provided with a supplemental sound opening 15 for permitting sound within the chamber 12 to be emitted there from through the top of the said main body.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and oper ation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is In a stringed musical instrument, a body providing a main sounding chamber, said body having an opening in its face communicating with the sounding chamber, a vertical partition abutting against the top and bottom of the body and forming a second chamber therein, said second chamber having an opening to the atmosphere inde pendent of and lying in the same plane as the first mentioned opening, said partition lying between the two mentioned openings, and a supplemental member having the configuration of the body and forming a second bottom therefor, said supplemental member being spaced from the bottom of the body to provide in combination with the side walls of the body and bottom thereof a third longitudinally extending compartment having communication with the second chamber at the bottom portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
