Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1dr. 1912.
Application filed February 2, 1912. Serial No. 674,950.
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DENMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholasville, in the county of Jessamine and State of'Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rloys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates totoys consisting of a movable figure, which, in the present instance is a horse; and it is the object of the invention to provide a simple and amusing toy which will simulate the movements of the horse when running, the figure also including a rider, the latter being mounted so as to partake of the movements of the horse.
lWith the herein stated object in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is anelevationof the toy, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2,-2 of Fig. l.- p
Referring specificallyv to the drawing, denotes a stand on which the figure is mounted. The stand is hollow and incluses the means to be presently described for actuatingvthe figure.
As shown, the figure represents a horse having a body portion 6, to the front and rear ends of which are pivoted'parts 7 and 8 which represent the front and hind legs respectively, said parts being arranged to `swing forward and rearward 1n a vertical plane and thus simulate the'motion of the legs of a horse when running. The head 9 of the'gure is formed integral with the neck 10, and the latter, in turn, is formed integral with the front legs or connected thereto so as to partake of the movements thereofythe neck and head s inging back when the front legs swing for ard, and vice, lversa. At the junction of theneck and the front legs, said parts are red ced in thicknessand t in a slot 11 in the forward end of the" body portion, with a pin 12 passing therethrough to form the pivotal connection.
The hind legs 8 are reduced in thickness at their junction with the body portion 6, the rear end of the latter having a slot 13 in which said reduced portion works, Witha pin lwpassing therethrough to form the l Yetal connection. The tail 14 of the horse Tmed integral with the reduced portion he hind legs 8, or connected thereto, so
as to swing with said legs. The front legs 7 'are 1n two sections which are pivot'ally connected at 15 to form the knee-joint, and the hind legs are also in two sections, the said sections being pivotally connected at 16 to form the heck-joint. On the body portion 6 1s mounted a figure 17 representing a rider, said'figure being pivoted at 18 to the body portion so that it may sway back and forth, the movement of the neck portion 10 being communicated to the figure by connecting the arms 19 thereof to said neck portion, as indicated at 20. The body portion 6 is rigidly support-ed on the stand 5 by a standard or post 21 rising from the top thereof. EX- i tending transversely of the stand 5, on the inside, and supported by the front and rear walls thereof, is a shaft 22 having a crank 23 which is connected by a. itman' 251. to a curved bar 25, said bar passing'atits ends through slots '26 in the top of the stand. One end of the bar is connected to the front legs 7 and the other en-dto the hind legs 8, 'y
the connection being made at thehoof portion of said legs, the said hoof portions be ing slotted as indicated at 27. the bar extend into the slots otally connected to the hoof portions by pins 28 passing therethrough. l -v The shaft`22 may be rotated in any suitable manner, as, tor 29. When the shaft 22 is in motion, the bar 25 is carried back and legs 7 and 8, the latter are swung bach:l and forth to simulate the movement of the legs ofl a horse when running, said movement of Y alsotransmitted to the neck, and the figure 17 as hereinbel tion pivotedto the body portion to swing to- ,105.
gether, and a hind leg portion pivoted to the body portion; a figure movably mounted on the body portion and connected to the neck portion, and means for swinging the legs.
2. A toy comprising a figure havinga 110 The end'sof I and are piv for instance, by' a spring moforth by thepitv A man 24, and as said bar is connected' tothe i piyotal connection with the body pnr-` 100 rigid body portion, a front leg and neckfportion pvoted to the'body portion to swing together, and ,afhind leg portion pivoted to the body portion, sid hind leg portion carrying n tail; a ligure movably mounted on the body portion and connected to the neck portion, and means for swingjllng the legs.
3. A toy comprising a figure having av rigid bodyportion, :i frontfleg and neck portion pyoted to the body portion to swing together, and a hind leg portion pivoied to the body portion; :i figure morably inoiinted on the body portion and connected to 'the neck portion, a bnr connecting the legs, a rotatable shaft having L crank, and a pitman connection between the crank and the ber.
4. A toy comprising e figure having :i
