Description

G. P. SISBOWER.
COUCH BED.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. a, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
GEORGE F. SISBOWER, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO NEW YORK COUCH BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ACORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
coUoH-Bnn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SIsBowER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couch- Beds, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of my invention which I at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of my lnvention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bed; Fig. 2 is an end View thereof, and. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In my application, Ser. No. 603,043, filed January 17, 1911, I have described and.
claimed an operating device for a telescoping bed of the kind often designatedas a couch, said device comprising a rock-shaft underneath and extending longitudinally of the bed, with an operating hand-lever applied to each end of the rock-shaft, the handle or power end of the lever projecting upward from the rock-shaft and movable transversely to the bed, whereby the pressure on the lever is a transverse pressure exerted in. the direction in which the frame is stiffest and in which also the telescoping movement takes place.
My present device is of the same general type, but is specifically an improvement thereon in that it is of a neater and more compact form since it omits the connecting link which is present in my former device between the hand-lever and the movable section of the bed. In particular, the operating hand-lever of my present arrangement is attached at its lower end to one end of the longitudinal rock-shaft which is mounted in a cross-bar near the bottom of the endframe of the bed, and is provided with a slot wherein is contained a stud projecting from a bracket on the extension section attached thereto at a point within the frame Specification of Letters Patent.

of the main section. This gives a changeable joint-connection of the hand-lever to the inner couch-sectionl Referring to the drawings" A represents the frame of the main section of the couch and B the frame of the extension section, the latter section being slightly shorter and lower than the former one so as to telescope therein, and the mattress fabrics of the.
sections being on approximately the same level. At each end of the main frame and near the topthereof'is a transverse angle iron A which serves as a guide track for" a roller, B mounted on the inner corner of the extension-frame B. Near each roller B Isattached to the frame B a bracket-B which projects outwardly through the end- I ersed by the aforesaid, stud B when the handle is thrown from side to side to extend or contract the bed. This arrangement brings the operating push or pull of the hand in almost a direct line with the top member of both sections to which the operating force may be applied to the best advantage. I am enabled by this means to carry out ina compact and convenient form my fundamental plan of hand-lever opera tion by which it becomes possible to mechanically work the section of a telescopic couch without departing from the cheap and slender construction characteristic of this type of bed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A couch bed comprising a main section, anextension section telescoping therewith, a hand lever pivoted to the main section and provided with a guide slot, a bracket jecting through the main section and adaptcarried by the extension section and pro- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, before two subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of September, 1911.

ed to contact with the said main section to limit the outward movement of the extension section, and a stud carried by the bracket and engaging the guide slot of the hand lever.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing" the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
