To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OB E. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carneyville, in the county of Sheridan and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steel Tape Lines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the ac-' comp'anying drawing.
This invention relates to tape measures, and has for an object the production of an eiiicient means for holding the tape line in the casing when in wound position.
Another object of the invention is the production of a shield provided with means to facilitate the withdrawing of the line from the casing when in a wound position.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with a part of the casing partially broken away. Fig. 3 is a top plan View. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the device, showing the shield in transverse section. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View of the shield.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1
designates the tape-containingcasing provided with an opening 2. A shield casing 3 is carried by said tape-containing-casing 1, incl osing the opening 2. A tape line 4 is carried within said tape-containing-casing 1 and is mounted upon a drum carried by a spring-tension-hub of the usual type, which is held in position by a screw 5. The tape line 4 is provided with a hook 6, having an upwardly extending tip 7 said hook being adapted to encircle the hook-engaging-roller 8 and pass over the frictional roller 9, carried by the shield casing 3. The top of the shield casing 3 extends in an inclined posi tion of approximately forty-five degrees and is provided with a top closure 10, which top closure terminates at a distance short of the upper end of the shield casing 3, so as to allow room to insert a finger between the face 11 of the top closure 10 and the upturned portion of the hook 7. This will also facilitate the withdrawing of the hook 6 from the hook-engaging-roller "8 and the frictional roller 9. It-willbe seen from the relative position of the roller 9 and the hook-engaging-roller 8, that the hook 6 will be directed into engagement with said hookengaging-roller 8 as the tape 4- is drawn into the casing 1.
From the foregoing description and by carefully considering Figs. 2 and 5 it will be seen that since the hook-engaging-roller and guiding-roller are placed closely together the tape line will be prevented from twisting. It will be further seen that the friction-roller 9 is so placed as to engage the arched portion of hook 6 when the tape line is fully drawn into the tape-line casing, thereby driving the loop portion of the hook into direct engagement with the hook-engaging-roller 8.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a tape-line casing, a shield casing carried by said tape-line casing, a tape line carried in said tape-line casing, said tape line provided at its outer end with a hook, said hook provided with a bowed portion terminating in an upturned tip, a hook-engaging roller carried by said shield casing, a friction roller carried by said shield casing and spaced to one side of said hook-engaging roller, whereby, when said tape is wound within said casing the bowed portion of said hook will ride upon said friction roller for guiding said bowed portion into engagement with said hook-engaging roller and holding said hook entirely within said shield casing, said shield casing provided with a top closure, said top closure terminating at a determined distance short of the top of said shield casing, whereby a finger may be inserted between the upper end of said top closure and said upturned tip of said hook, for facilitating the withdrawal of said hook from engagement with said rollers, said top closure constituting a protector means for said hook and said rollers.
