Specification of Letters Patent.
TACK-DRAWER] v Patentcdxovj,1912.
Application filed'septcmber 13. 1911. se-rial No. 49.044.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Gnonon PERCY SMITH,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, r'esiding at Youngs (love, New Brunswick,
Canada have invented new and useful Im- 1 provcments in Tack-Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in tack drawers.
r positing the same within the hollow handle of the drawer.
I also aim to provide a device of this class which may be operated by one hand of the user, the said operation including the withdrawal of the tack, as well as the depositing of the tack within the handle of the drawer.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and to improve the existing art by providing a device of this class which is simple, inexpensive, and which may be readily and easily operated, which comprises few parts and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With these objects, and others of a similar nature in-view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings,l igure 1 is a perspective view of a' tack drawer constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 1
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates generally the improved tack drawer. This drawer 1 comprises a handle 2 which is hollow to provide a compartment- 3, and the said compartment is normally closed through the medium of a cap 4. The numeral 5 designates the shank of the drawer, which in the present instance has been illustrated as being formed integrally with the handle 2. The extremity of the drawer is provided with the tack lift proper 6, the same being constructed of some suitable metal, and having its outer face inclined and projecting above its top proper, .the said inclined portions being centrally provided with a V- shaped slot 7 whereby the prongs 8 adjacent the said slot may be inserted around the tack so as to bring its head between said prongs and to be removed by the prongs and deposited "within the passage 8 formed by the shank 5, the upper face of the lift 6, and a sheathing of metal which is designated by the numeral 9. The lift 6 has its lower face provided with an enlargementor head 10,
the latter serving as a fulcrum point upon which the device is swung to raise the tack. It will be noted that a slide. space is 'leftbetween the prongs 8 and the metallic sheathing 9, so that upon the elevating of the drawer, the tack will be permitted to pass through the passage 8 to within the opening or compartment 3 provided by the handle 2.,
The numeral 11 designates a door which may be mounted in suitable bearings and avhich normally closes the passage 8. This door 11 is provided with a bar 12, the latter being pivoted as at 13 to the wall provided between the compartment 3. and the passage 8.
Loosely connected with the bar. 12 is a pin 14, the same passing through a suitable passage in the handle and having its outer ex tr'emiity provided with a head 15. The numera 16 designates a spring which surroun s the pin 14, and exerts a pressure between its head 15 and the handle 2 of the drawer, and which normally closes the door 11' and the passage 8.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
it will be noted that when a tack is drawn, as previously described, the said tack, upon the elevation of the drawer will slide down the passage 8 and contact with the door 11. Upon the downward movement of the pin 14, the door 11 will be opened thus permitting the tack to enter the compartment 3.
This arrangement-prevents the clogging of the tacks within the passage 8, and when a suflicient amount of tacks are receivedwithin the compartment 3, the cap 4 may be removed and the said tacks passed throughthe reservoir 2 to a desired receptacle.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is v A tack drawer including a handle which is integrally formed with a reduced longitudinall extending shank, the handle con,- taining a chamber provided with a removable closure, the wall of the chamber adjacent the shank being arranged at a right angle to the upper face of the said shank, a
door for closing the opening between theshank and the chamber; said door comprisangular forked tack lifter secured to the 10 ing a flattened member, a link secured to the end of the shank.
' dbor and pivotally connected to the said In testimony whereofl aflix my signature wall of the chanilier -a headed rod passing in presence of two witnesses.
through an opening in the handle an loosely connected with the link, an expansion GEORGE PERCY SMITH spring between the head of the rod and the Witnesses:
handle, a sheathingl secured to the handle H. GORDON SMITH, and the opposite s1 es of the shank, and an C IARLEs F. SANFORD.
