SEED-PLANTER.
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed-Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in hand planters for dropping corn and other seed.
The ob ect of the invention is to provlde a seed planter of this character which Wlll be simple, strong and durable in construction and convenient and effective in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in. which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved planter; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section; and Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on the planes indicated by the lines 4-4 and 5'5 in Fig. 3.
The invention comprises a body 1 pro vided at its upper end with a handle 2 and at its lower end with a shoe 3 adapted to be pushed into the earth. The corn or other seed is supplied to the dropping shoe through a chute formed by a channeled metal strip 4 secured to the top of the body 1 over a longitudinally extending groove 5 formed therein, said body being preferably constructed of wood, as illustrated. A flared or funnel-shaped inlet section 6 is arranged upon the body at the upper end of the chute 4 and the lower end of the latter projects beneath and into the shoe 3. Said shoe is constructed of a metal plate of substantially triangular-shape arranged upon the front face of the lower end of the body and having its sides 7 bent downwardly against the side edges of said body, the outer or lower corners of said sides 7 being cut away or beveled so that the shoe 3 is tapered and the upper or inner corners of said side 7 being shaped to provide apertured ears 8 to serve as bearings for the transverse pivot rod 9 of a valve plate 10 which normally closes the open bottom of the shoe 3. Said. valve plate is actuated to its closed position by a spring 11 andis adapted to be retracted by a pull rod Specification of Letters Patent.

12. The spring 11 is preferably a coil spring arranged upon one arm 13 of an angular member 14 the other arm 15 of which is rigidly secured at 16 upon the bottom of the valve plate 10. The pull rod 12 has its lower end engaged with an aperture or eye formed at the angle of the member 15 and its upper end passes through a guide eye or opening formed in a curved brace 17 for 1 the handle 2, said upper end being provided with a finger loop 18 arranged within said brace, which latter also forms a guard. The brace 17 has its lower end secured by a screw or the like 19 to the rear face of the body 1 and its upper end is apertured to receive a fastening bolt 20 which also passes through the body 1 and the hand grip 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In operation, the planter is held in the right hand while the corn or other seed is taken in the left hand from a can or other receptacle carried by the operator and dropped into the funnehshaped inlet 6 of the chute 1. The shoe 3 is then pushed into the ground and with the fingers of the right hand the pull rod 12 is drawn upwardly to open the valve plate 10 and at the same time the body is raised to draw the shoe out of the ground and to leave the seed in the latter.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention is exceedingly simple in construction so that it may be produced at a comparatively small cost and will be strong and durable in use. Its peculiar construction also renders it exceedingly effective in o eration and easy and convenient to manipu ate.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The herein described hand planter comprising a body provided with a chute extending longitudinally thereof and having a hop per at its upper end, the shoe plate 3 bent around and secured to the lower end of the body and being in communication with the chute, the triangular sides 7 of the shoe plate having their upper extremities projecting beyond the side of the body to provide the apertured ears 8, the pivot rod 9 in said ears, the swinging valve plate 10 having its upper end engaged with the pivot rod and its lower end arranged between the sides 7 of the shoe to close the latter, the angular member 14 having an eye at its angle and the two arms 13, 15, the arm 15 extending downwardly and being engaged with and secured to the intermediate portion of the valve plate and chute, a three-sided shoe secured to the.
lower end of the body and communicating With said chute, a pivot arranged in the side portions of said shoe, a valve plate hung from said pivot and adapted to close the shoe, an angular member having one end engaged With and fixed to the valve plateand its other end arranged in and guided by an opening in the body, a coil spring arranged on the last mentioned end of the member and confined between its angle and said body, a hand grip, a curved brace for the hand grip having one end engaged With one end of the hand grip and its other end secured to the body, a transverse fastening passed through the body, the hand grip and the brace and a pull rod slidable in an opening in the brace and having a finger loop at its upper end and a hook at its lower end to engage an opening or eye in the angle of said member.
In testimony whereof We hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
