Headed screws 23 are received in tapped openings in the ends of the pivot rod 20 and the heads of these screws bear against outer faces of the bracket arms, thereby preventing a longitudinal movement of the pivot rod in its bearings in the supporting brackets. It will thus be understood that the column stop bar 20 is maintained fixed'against rotative movement but that the column stops are enabled to receive .a relative sliding adjustment along the column stop mounted for pivotal movement t-hereon,each

A series of denominational stoplevers 37 are pivoted on a pivot .rod 38 fixed at its ends in the tabulator frame. The denominational tabulat-or stop levers are extended upwardly and forwardly to form denominational stops 39, which are adapted to beprojected through slotted openings .in a
.guide plate 4C0 secured to the tabulator frame. The lower end of each. denominational stop lever is connectedto a forwardly extending link 41 which in turn is pivoted to depending armu42 of an angular lever 43, the various angular levers being mount: ed on a pivot rod 14; securedto the base of the machine. A forwardly extending arm 45 on each angular lever is connected to a key stem 46 received in guide slots in two fixed guide plates 47 and 48, each stem being provided with the usual denominational key 49. Each angular lever hasits depending arm 42 connected to one end of a contractile spring 50, the opposite end of which is connected to the guide plate 17. A depression of a denominational key a9 is effective to project the corresponding denominational stop 39 into the path of the column stops and release the carriage by the usual carriage releasing mechanism, not shown.
The means by which the column stops are cleared and by which they are-setwill now be described. Let it be assumed that all of the column sto'ps areset, as indicated in clear them preparatory to resetting thelcolumn stops in a new arrangement. tabulator frame by screws 71. This positioning device 70 is in the nature of a sheet metal plate which is provided with two forwardly extending arms 72 and 73. The arm bar and above the locking bar-l3, whereas 'the lower arm 73 extends beneath the looking bar and column stop-barand has an upwardly extending engaging member 74. It will likewise be observed that a similar positioning device or plate 70 is secured to the left-hand side of the tabulator frame 34 by screws 71 The construction of this second positioning device 7 0" is identically the same reference numerals with the addition thereto of the exponent designate parts of the positioning device 70. In a 'type'writing machine, the combi nation of a carriage, a column stop bar, a series of column stops, the bar and stops being relatively adjustable so that said stops may be adjusted to different positions lengthwise of the bar and each stop being movable also in a plane which extends transversely of the stop bar, means for lock-' ing the stops against relative adjustment each stop throwing it into and out of locking engagement with its locking means, a positioning device against which the entire series of column stops is adapted to be grouped, a key, and means which are operative when said key is maintained in the actuated position and when a relative movement between said stops and positioning device is etfect-ed for effecting a transverse movement of the stops to release them from their locking means and for effecting a grouping of the released stops against said positioning device.
