Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. KURowsiii, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, (but having taken out his first but not his final United States naturalization papers,) residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in typewriting machines, and more especially to tabulating mechanism, whereby the position of the typewriter carriage can be controlled either to jump selectively to any one of a plurality of major columns or zones from the starting position of the carriage, or from any position preceding the zone selected, or to jump the carriage successively to a plurality of predetermined major columns or zones, and at the same time select a particular decimal column or letter-space in each zone at which the carriage stops. This application is an improvement on my copending a nplication, No. 170,132, filed May 22, 1917 now Patent No. 1,289,820, dated December 31, 1918).
In the form herein illustrated a single set of tabulating keys is used to control themaj or or jump movements of the carriage. These keys, when depressed individually, operate either one of two plungers in two different groups, according to the position of a set of floating interponent levers. One set of plungers, which may be designated as the decimal tabulating plungers, are projected into the path of the next succeeding one of a series of carriage-carried stops, one for each letter-space or decimal column of the carriage. That is to say, there is a series of these settable stops, one in each letter-space, which may be individually set by a key provided for this purpose, which may be accomplished by striking the special key when the carriage is in a position to bring the in1t1al letter-space or 'decimal column of the zone selected to'the printing point of the typewriter. This set'of plungers and stops enable the carriage, under the control of the tabulator key, to jump successively to each major column or zone and vstop at certain particular letter spaces or decimal columns in each zone, according to the particular setting of the seriesof certain stops and deci-V mal tabulating keys actuated.

The second set of plungers, with the exception of one, does not, in' the form illustrated, coperate directly with this second set of stops to obstruct the travel of the carriage. The excepted one of the plungers is illustrated as operated directly by its key to move into the path of the next succeeding carriage-stop in case its key 1s operated. It is operated also indirectly through the aid of the other plungers and keys, when any one of the other tabulating keys is operated. To do this, the stops in the second set are shown as graded in their range or reach, so as to cooperate electively with a series of cam levers or selectors brought into play individually by associated ones of the second set of plungers. That is to say, when any one of the tabulating keys, except one, is operated when column selecting, it will raise the associated cam lever above its fellows into the ath of movement of the second set of carriage-carried stops, but as these stops are graded in their reach, if it is an intenrnediate tabulating key corresponding to a later column than the first, one or more of the carriage stops will escape pastit as the reach is too short. Inasmuch as the reach of each stop increases in succession from first to last, the proper stop having the right reach will come into engagement with this cam lever, thrusting the cam lever before it and rocking a frame universal to all of the cam levers. This frame is shown as connected to thrust up the only plunger in the second set which is capable of obstructing the path of movement of the second set of carriage-stops. This enables the obstructing plunger to remain passive while the carriage travels, until the particular majoi` column or zone determined b the carriage, corresponding to the tabu ating key actuated, comes to the printing point, when the corresponding carriage-stop will force this plunger up to its obstructing position in time to catch the same stop, and thus obstruct further movement of the carriage.

One set of these\bars or plungers 18 are the decimal tabulating plungers or counterstops for selecting particular decimal columns or letter-spaces 'lnfmaJor columns or zones.
The other set of bars or plungers v19 are for -selecting any one of the series of col- `plungers 19. VThe interponents 2O are floatingly mounted by being pivoted onva rod 22, which is supported by a shift-frame 23. Thev shift-frame 23 can occupy one of two positions, corresponding' to the interponents acting as an intermediary between the tabulating key levers 16 and either the plungers 18 or the plungers 19.
To adjust'the. shift-frame 23, there are provided a pair of keys, one of which 24 is e the decimal tabulating key and the other of 1,3se,92e
which 25 is the column tabulating key. These keys are mounted respectively on thrust rods 26 and 27, which are pivotally connected at their inner ends to arms 28 and 29, forming a bell crank pivotally mounted byvmeans of a rod 30. The arm 29 is connected by means of a link 31 to the rod 22 of the shift-frame 23. This link 31 has a projection 32 to engage the cross bar of the shift-frame 23.
The two positions of the shift-frame 23, and thus of the interponents 20, are determined by a toggle lock, Fig. 2, which includes an arm 33 on the frame 23, and a collapsible spring link 34 pivotally connected to the arm 33. The spring link 34 includes a pair of telescoping tubes 35 and 36, Fig. 3, the former of which is pivoted at 37 to the arm 33, and the latter of which is pivoted at 38 to a fixed support. Within the collapsible link there is provided an extension spring 39 yieldingly locking the frame. by passing to either side of a dead center between the pivots 38 and 39a, as indicated in Fig. 2, according to the position of adjustment of the interponents 2O and the shiftframe 23. The thrust- rods 26 and 27 for the selecting keys are guided at their for-v ward ends in a comb 40, which is universal to all the tabulating key-levers 16.
In order to enable the operation of whichever set of plungers the interponents 2O are in conjunction with, it is necessary that these plungers release the carriage from the escapement mechanism 8, so that the carriage can travel under the impulse of its spring-barrel indicated at 41.' To do this, the plungers 18 are provided with shelves 42, and the plungers 19 with shelves 43, formed by notches in all of the plungers. The shelves 42 and 43 engage and operate a bar 44 universal to all of the plungers. This `bar 44 forms part vof a rock-frame 45 pivoted at 46, solthat when the bar 44 is forced upwardly it will rock down an arm 47 of the frame 45. The arm 47 draws down on a link 48 to rock a lever 49, carrying at its front end a roller 50, which underlies the rack 9, and thus raises it out of engagement with the pinion 10. This happens when any one of the tabulating keys 15 is actuated, whether decimal tabulating or column tabulating. The carriage' is then free to move until arrested by either decimal sto s 51'or column stops 52, according to the c aracter of tabulating control in actionat any particular time.
If the interponents are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the selection will be a decimal tabulating one, and the plungers 18, when operated against the tension of their springs 53, will come into the path of such of the decimal stops 51 as are set.
There is a series of these decimal stops 51, one for eachletter-space or decimal column of the carriage 7. They are adjustably mounted in a supporting bar 54, so as to occupy either a passive raised position or an active depressed position. These decimal stops 51 are thus'mounted in the bar 54 for vertical adjustment, by being inserted in vertical slots therein and having projections 55, limiting their uppermost and lowermost positions. They may be locked in their different positions by spring-pressed ball detents 56 engaging in notches 57, provided on their edges.
Preferably, the decimal stops 51 are key set. They may be all in their raised position and the carriage moved to its extreme right-hand or starting position. The carriage is then advanced to the initial letterspace of the first major column or zone desired, and a special or stop-setting key 58 depressed in the manner more particularly described in application No. 140,818, filed January 5, 1917 (now Patent No. 1,229,559, dated June 12, 1917). The key 58 depresses a key lever 59, which thrusts downwardly a link 60 to rock a bell crank 61, which is connected to draw down on an angular link 62. The link is guided for vertical movement, and has an arm 63 projecting over the series of decimal stops 51, and at any particular instant stands over the particular one corresponding to the letter-space position of the carriage at that instant. It is thus evident that by moving the carriage to each posion desired for the several successive zones, and depressing the decimal tabulating stop- 100 setting key 58 at these points, the stops 51 will be selectively set to subsequently determine the position of the carriage for these major columns or zones. The stop determines the `beginning of the zones, but when 105 it coperates with the several tabulating keys 15 through the plungers 18y it will arrest the carriage at the decimal column or letter-space corresponding to the particular tabulating key 15 actuated.
There are ten of these tabulating keys 15, corresponding to ten decimal columns or letter-spaces of each Zone or major column, at any one of which spaces it is possible to selectively position the carriage by a single 115 active stop 51. The tabulating keys 15 have indications thereon of the decimal spaces which they control (see Fig. 4).
To unset the decimal stops 51, there is provided a slide 64, which underlies the upper 120 extensions 55 on all the decimal carriage stops 51. Thisfslide 64 is provided with cam slots 65 engaging pins 66 on the bar 54, so that when-it is moved endwise of this bar against the tension of a spring 67, it will be 125 forced upwardly, carrying with it all of the stops 51 which happen to have been set, restoring them to an unset condition.

The stops 52 are locked against accidentall displacement on the double rack, bar 70, by

As stated above, only one of the plungers 19 acts as an obstructing member to determine the stopping point of the carriage 7. This plunger is operated in the first place by its own key 69: In the second place, it 4is operated by any one of Jthe other tabulating keys 15 through the'intermediary'of their plungers 19 and other mechanism which will now be described.

They plungers 18 and 19 are guided for vertical movement, at their upper ends by combs 83. and 84, respectively, Fig. 4, and at their-lower ends by a comb 85. The extent of vertical movement of -the plungers is limited by means of rods 86 extending through slots provided in the plungers. The interponent levers 20 are held in register with the tabulating levers 16 and with the plungers 18 and 19 by extending at their rear ends into the spaces between the teeth of the comb 85; and at their front ends by extending into spaces between the teeth of a comb 87, provided on the shift-frame 23.
The operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. If it is desired to do decimal-tabulating and jump successively to each major column or zone, the decimaltabulating key 24 is pressed into the Fig. 1 position. Thus, the shift-frame 23 is rocked to bring the interponent heads 21 between the tabulating key-levers 16 and the plungers 18. The stops 51 carried by the carriage may be set by the stopesetting key 58, according to the position of the several zones or columns desired. That is to say, the carriage is brought to bring the first digit space or decimal column to the printing point of each successive zone, and thejkey 58 is depressed each time thecarriage is so positioned, thus depressing the proper stop 51 to its active position. With the parts in this condition, the carriage, when started to the right, will of necessity stop at each zone in succession when any one of the tabulating keys 15 is depressed. The stop 51 determines the zone, while the particular tabulat-V ing key 15 determines the selection of a certain decimal column in the zone, as indicated in Fig. 4, by the designations on the tabulating keys which are from units to millions with an additional key for the decimal point.
If a different type of work is to be done, wherein it is not desired to write in every major column or zone, thenthe other means of selection may be used, so that the operative can skip over such major columns or zones as it is not desired to write in, but can arrive at the desired zone or major column instantly. For this type of work, the column-tabulating key 25 is pressed rearwardly, as in Fig. 8, thus rocking the shiftframe 23 rearwardly to bring the interponent heads 21 between the tabulating keylevers 16 and the plungers 19. If it is desired to write in the first major column or zone, the tabulating key 69, Fig. 4, is operated, which, through one of the interponents 20, will project the only obstructing plunger 68 of this set into the path of the stops 52. The first stop 52, Fig. 4, will engage under these `conditions the projected plunger 68, and bringthe carriage to rest for the first zone or major column. If any other major column or zone is desired, the corresponding tabulating key 15 having the 'number of the zone thereon is struck, so that it will raise its associated plunger 18, and thus raise the associated selector 7 4. If this selector happens to be one corresponding to one of the later Zones, the first few stops 52 will not reach it, as their lower legs are not long enough, and they will not operate their own selectors 74, which lie in a depressed or ineffective position. There will thus be a cross selection, so that the proper column stop 52, corresponding to the tabulating key 15 actuated, will operate a corresponding selector 74, so as to rock the frame 75. This frame is connected to raise the obstructing stop 68 just in time to catch the particular column stop 52, which brought it into play. The carriage will thus be stopped at the zone or major column selected as soon as the depression of the tabulating key is relieved, the rack bar 9 will come into engagement with the pinion 10 and be once more under the control of the escapement mechanism, which is so arranged as to permit a fractional movement of the carriage t0 clear the stop 52 from the obstructing plunger 168.
It will thus be seen that the carriage can be quickly positioned for major column or Zone-writing in one-of two ways, that is, success-ive zone-writing with incidental decimal or letter-space selection, or selected zonewriting, .according to the requirement of the `particular type of work being done.
Moreover, there need be no annoyance to the typist in properly positioning the stops 51 and 52 in corresponding positions, since if any stop 52 is positioned, the typist can set the corresponding stop 51 by first depressing the key 69 to position the carriage by the already positioned stop 52, and then depressing the stop-setting key 58 to set the desired stop 51. It will be noted that in the device of the present disclosure the stopsetting key may be thus effective even if the column key 25 remains depressed. Thus when it is desired to position a stop 51 for each column, the successive finger actions may be carried out practically automatically. If column-stops 52 are already set, it is also a very simple matter to change the adjustment ofthe decimal-stops 51 by operating the slide 64 to make them all ineffective, then spacing the carriage along by the stops 52 to set the stops 51, and if any stops 51 are to be set at intermediate points, feeding the carriage along by the usual space-bar from the nearest stop 52.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
