It will be seen, in Figs. 1 and 3, that if shaft 1.5- is shifted longitudinally to the left, roller 1l' of lever '1l-will roll up the inclined surface of cone 1G, thereby lifting with its-other end rack bar 6 from the engagement with pinion 5 and thus freeing the carriage from vthe control'of the escapement mechanism and enable it to either run freely or under suoli control as may be until stopped by the tabulating device to be described later cii.
