mechanism whereby relative movement of the platen and printing mechanism in the direction of line spacing will be arrested at one or more predetermined points to properly locate the entries or records to be typcwritten upon the work sheet.
The object of the invention is to provide a line space tabulator, consisting of a catch and a series of stops, the catch and stops being carried respectively by those elements of the machine which are movable to effect the line. spacing ot' the work, `and being related so that the catch will engage a stop to arrest the line spacing movement at the properpoint without attention on the part of the 'operator other than that required to move the catch into position to be subsequently engaged by the stop.
To the accomplishment of this object, the illustrated embodiment of the invention includes a depressible catch, mounted on and Amovable with the frame of a flat platen typewriter, and cooperating with stops associated with the platen and arranged in a series disposed longitudinally thereof, the depression of the catch presenting the same in a path obstructed by a stop to arrest the frame when the printing mechanism carried' by the latter has arrived at the proper point opposite the work sheet.

The lillliott-Fisherv typewriter -includes in its organization a stationary flat platen 1 equipped with longitudinal tracks or guides 2 and 3. Above the platen 1 is disposed the ,machine proper, which includes a frame 4,
movable longitudinally of the platen upon the tracks or guides to space the lines of writing on the work sheet, and supporting a traveling carriage 5 which carries the printing mechanism and is movable transversely of the platen on the frame 4 to letter space thel writing. The tracks 2 and 3 are toothed, as shown.
Mounted on the machine frame 4 and in advance thereof is vthe line spacing mechanism, comprising a transverse spindle 6,' pinions 7'ixed thereon and .meshing with'the toothed tracks, an oscillatory line'spacing actuator 8 for rotating the spindle and pinions, and stop mechanism 9 for determining the 'throw of the actuator 8 to regulate the width of the spaces betweenthe lines of writing.
The structure thus far described is common to the Elliott-Fisher machine and consible catch .10 in the form of a vertically disposed bar mounted to reciprocate in guides 11', 12 and 13, the guide 1 1 being attached to the top of the frame 4 and the guides 12 and 13 being formed at the opposite ends of'a guide bracket 14 secured to the lower part of the frame. The catch 10 is provided with a pin 15 extended through a vertically disposed slot 16 in the bracket 14 to prevent the catch from turning. The catch is normally held in its elevated position by a spring 17 encircling the catch and interposed between the guide 12 and a collar 18 fixed on the catch and having a projecting finger piece, key, or handlel 19., by means of which the catch is depressed against they resistance of the spring.17. The lower end of the catch 10 is vflattened, as indicated at 20, but its extremity is too large to be received withinthe normal spaces between the teeth of thc track 2 directly over which the catch is 1n untcd. Assuming 4that the machine is at the rear end of the platen, where it is usuall positioned during the adjustment, remova or replacement of a work sheet, the operator, by placing her finger upon the key 19, depresses the catch 10 upon the. top-of the rail 2. Pressure upon the key 1.9 'is maintained, and the machin'eis drawn forwareluntil the catch arrives opposite and enters-the first notch, thus arresting the machine in position for the first .entry upon the Worksheet. Theke'y 19 is then released and the catch is restored or elevated bythe s .ring 17.7. The operator now proceeds to ma e the entry, utilizing the line spacing mechanism if said entry embraces ,more than a single line of writing. The

vIt is of course obvious that instead of utilizing one '.of'the ordinary tracks-or guides as a stop carrying bar, a separate stop bar mightv be mountedatone side of a track, and either` notched or provided with either stationary or Aadjustable stop projections. as the broad novelty of the invention is concerned, it is immaterial which of the relatively movable elements of the machine carries the stop or catch, respectively, or Whether themovable machine element is the printing In fact, so far mechanism or platen, or whether the latter-is of the round or fiat type, since it is believed to be new to provide line space tabulating mechanism designed to supplement the ordi'- stood as reserving the right .to effect such changes, modifications, and variations of the illustrated structure as may come fairly within the scope of the protectionprayed.
