To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, OTTO C. SCHUPP, JACOB J. Soi-Iori), and J AMES H. BARR, citi- Zens of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ghio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Burial-Vaults, of-
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in burial vaults and more particularly to a metallic burial vault and the primary object of. the invention is to provide a vault of this character which is both burglar and water proof.
A further object of t-he invention is to provide a removable door for a vault which when once effectively applied is not adapted to be removed, and still another object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved locking means for the door.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device which is extremely simple and durable in construetion, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same as seen on line 8-3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the end wall removed; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the door removed.
In describing our invention, we shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the body of our improved vault, which consists of the top and bottom metallic plates 2 and 3 respectively, the side edges of which are bent to permit the riveting thereto of the side plates 4 and 5, said side plates being so arranged as to overlap the side edges of the bottom plate and be overlapped by the side edges of the top plate. ing is substantially square in cross section and the one end thereof which forms the rear end of the device is closed by means of a head plate 6, the side edges of which are bent inwardly to form flanges, said fianges being riveted or otherwise secured to the top, bottom and side plates of the body.
rl`he front plate 7, which has the side edges thereof also provided with integral flanges, whereby the same may be riveted or otherwise secured to the walls of the body, is providedon the outer face thereof with an integral annular projection or flange 8, which surrounds an opening in said front plate. The inner periphery of this flange or projection S is threaded to receive the threaded ai'inular flange or projection 9 on the inner face of a closure or door 10, said door being provided with a handle member 11 thereon, whereby the same may be readily turned.
It will be seen from this construction that the door l() may be readily applied to its effective position by engaging the threaded fiange thereof with the threaded inner periphery of the projecting portion 8 of the front plate of said body, and in order to lock said door in its effective position and pre vent the removal thereof, said fiange or projection 9 on said door is provided with a plurality of studs or the like 12. The inner wall of the front plate 7 has pivotally mounted thereon a pawl 18 which is normally forced downwardly by means of a leaf spring 14 on said plate and as this pawl is provided with a groove or the like 15, the same is adapted to engage the studs 12 on said cover or closure. The pawl is so arranged that the door may be readily turned to its effective position, but any attempt to turn the same in an opposite direction will be in vain, since the groove in said pawl will lock in engagement with one of the studs to prevent the turning of the door in that particular direction. In this manner it will be seen that after the door is once positioned effectively, the same cannot be removed, and is thus burglar proof. In view of the particular arrangement of the top, bottom and side plates, it will further be segu that the device is substantially water roo p From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a device which is eX- tremely simple, and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation. While we have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perit'orm the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in torni, propo-rtion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any oit the principles ot the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what We claim is l. A metallic burial vault comprising a body of suitable design, head plates secured thereto, the one of said plates being provided with a threaded opening, a closure therefor adapted to be threaded into engagement with the opening in said plate, said Closure being provided on its inner tace with a plurality of studs, and a spring held locking member Carried on the inner tace of the last mentioned plate adapted to engage the studs of said closure to prevent the removal of the same after being effectively positioned.
