EXTENSIBLE HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Hat- Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat pins and has for its objects to provide an improved device of the class which is composed of two separate parts telescopically connected and longitudinally adjustable, whereby the length of the pin may be increased or decreased to meet the requirements of the many different sized hats now in vogue.
A further object is to provide a connection between the parts which will permit of a rapid extension or contraction of the pin.
A still further object is to provide novel means for preventing the pin from becoming accidentally disengaged from the hat.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists broadly of two telescopically connected parts one of which parts may be quickly extended from or retracted into the outer part.
For a clearer understanding of the invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention showing the pin in extended position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the pin in retracted position. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the lower end of the pin. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary view showing the shoulder 9.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts in all the views 1 designates a hat pin composed of the parts 2 and 3, the part 2 of which is provided at one end with a head f of any usual or well known construction and the part 3 is tapered to a sharp cutting edge 5 at the other end. The inner member or part 3 is of solid tubular formation and provided with spiral grooves 6 of relatively high pitch extending substantially throughout its entire length and adapted when the parts are telescopically assembled to engage two short inclined or spiral protuberances 7 formed in the outer end of the central bore 8 of the part 2.
It will be noted that the length of the inner part 3-is somewhat greater than that of the outer part 2 and that the spiral groove 6 extends to the outer extremity of the pro jecting portion of the member 3. There fore the outer end of the part 3 always protrudes from the part 2 and by virtue of the spiral groove 6 prevents the pin from accidentally becoming disengaged from the hat of the wearer. This double function of the spiral groove 6 obviates the necessity of employing an additional fastening member for securing the pin to the hat.
By terminating the spiral groove 6 of the inner member 3 a short distance from its inner extremity the parts cannot be separated. WVhen the pin has reached its limit of extension the innermost protuberance 7 engages the shoulder 9 at the end of the spiral groove.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A hat pin comprising two telescopic parts, the outer of said parts being provided with internal protuberances, and the inner part having spiral grooves engaging said protuberances and terminating a short distance from its inner extremity forming a shoulder, whereby one of said protuberances will engage said shoulder to prevent said inner part from being entirely extended from said outer part.
