Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (bet. 29, it@
Application ied January S1, 1912. Serial No. 674,569.
To a/Z fr0/wm z'zf may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS C. Benini, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State or' illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements. in lamp posts, and has for its object the provision of a lamp post of improved construction and operation. f
ldy invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which-' p Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of a lamp post embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a section taken on line -w of Fig. l, and Fig. 3, an enlarged elevation of a combustible-gas tank employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a holiow lamp post 1 which may be made of cast iron or other suitable material and is equipped at its top With a. burner 2 and a surrounding globe or shade 3. The upper end Ll oi' post 1 is closed and a vertical pipe 5 is threaded in top 4 and serves as a support and supply pipe for burner 2. Pipe 5.
extends centrally Within post 1 and its lower end passes through a spider 6 and is positioned thereby. At its lower end the pipe 5 carries a pipe coupling 7 and a combustiblegas tank 8 is arranged in the lower portion of post 1 and provided with a discharge pipe 9 detachably secured to pipe 5 by means of coupling 7. A supply pipe 10 is also connected with discharge pipe 9 and both pipes 9 and 10 are provided with suitable valves .11 and 12 respectively. A hinged door 13 is provided for the lower portion of post 1 and a lock 14 is also provided for maintaining said door in closed position When desired.
In use, tank 8 is filled with acetylene gas or other combustible gas under pressure and employed to supply gas to burner 2 through pipe 5 by opening valve 11. W hen the gas in tank 8 1s exhausted, said tank may be iiled on the spot by connecting with supply pipe 10, closing valve 11 and opening valve 12 and forcing the gas under pressure into the tank. Or, if desired, the tank may be removed by means of coupling 7 and taken to a factory or other station for re-iliing and replaced by a previously :Filled tank. In either use the construction will be found to be strong and durable and easily nianipulated. The door 13 adords ready access to the tank and lock le prevents unauthorized tampering therewith.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wlsh to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention., what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
rlChe combination of a hollow lamp post; a locked door for the lower portion thereof; a burner on top of said post; a vertical pipe in said post and leading from said burner to the lower portion thereof; a combustible-gas tank having a discharge pipe detachably coupled to said vertical pipe; a valve in said discharge pipe; a supply pipe connected With said discharge pipe between said valve and said tank; and a valve in said supply pipe, substantially as described.
testimony whreof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
