SILENT FLUSHING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914..
Application filed November 28, 1913. Serial No. 803,504.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM THOMAS Cowrnnrrrwarrn, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at 5 Disraeli street, Mount Eden, Auckland, in the Provincial District of Auckland, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silent Flushing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
According to this invention the silent flushing apparatus is comprised of two cylinders, one located within the other. The inner cylinder receives water from the service pipe which projects downwardly within it and forms a guide for a conical valve adapted to close an opening at the bottom of the cylinder. A. lever having a float at its end is pivoted upon the bottom of the inner cylinder, and is operable by a pull chain for the purpose of opening said valve, and causing water to flow from the inner into the outer cylinder, from which it is discharged by an ordinary flushing siphon.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation showing the cistern in its normal position. Fig. 2, a similar view showing the cistern at the period when the siphon is established.
The cylinder, 1, is fixed in an outer cylinder, 2, and has a closed top, 3, and a bottom, 1, in which is an opening, 5, closed by a conical valve, 6. The valve has a stem, 7, by which it is guided in the pipe, 8, projecting toward the bottom of the cylinder from the main supply, 9. A lever, 10, having a float, 11, upon its end is pivoted at 12, in a bracket, 13, fixed to the bottom of the cylinder, and is pivoted at 1 1 to a vertical rod, 15, which passes through a slot in a lever, 16. The lever 16, is pivoted in a bracket, 17, upon the topof the cylinder, 1, and is provided with pull chain, 19, at its outer end. A collar, 20, upon the rod, 15, is engaged by the lever after it has been pulled down to a predetermined extent by means of the pull chain. A siphon, 21, of ordinary construction, is arranged within the outer cylinder.
In operation water is supplied to the inner cylinder under the service pressure so that it rises therein to a height limited by the degrees of pressure, air being compressed above it in the upper part of the cylinder. Upon the pulling of the chain,
the lever, 16, is operated so as to raise the conical valve, 6, and cause water to flow from the inner into the outer cylinder, the rising of the float, 11, holding the valve up. When the water has risen sufficiently high in the outer cylinder, siphonag'e is established, and flushing is effected. The float then falls with the water, the conical valve closes upon its seat, and a further supply of water passes into the inner cylinder. The
falling of the float raises the rod, 15, and returns the lever, 16, to its normal position. The parts are disposed and timed in their action as described, so that the operation of flushing is practically noiseless.
That I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In apparatus of the nature indicated, the combination of an inner and outer chamber, means for supplying water to the inner chamber, an opening in the bottom of said inner chamber, a valve normally closing said opening and adapted to open upwardly, a pivoted lever located below the inner chamher and adapted to operate the valve, a float mounted on said lever on the same side of its pivot as said valve is located, a vertical rod connected at its lower end to said lever on the side of the pivot remote from said float, a lever adapted to operate the upper end of said vertical rod, and means for operating, by hand, the latter lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
WV. T. COVVPERTI-IIVAITE.
\Vitnesses HENRIE H. RAYWARD, A. L. FERNEYI-IOUGH.
