Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. PEASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gypsum, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in drills and more particularly to a countersink drill, the object of the invention being to provide a drill especially adapted to be inserted into an opening and countersink one end thereof for the reception of the head of a bolt, rivet or other fastening means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drill of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of 'manufacture and at the same time is simple in construc tion and operation.
W'ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is an elevation of my improved drill showing the same closed in full lines and open in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the drill in its operative position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I preferably form the drill in two sections 1 and 2 which are pivotally secured together at the intersection of the shank 3 and the cutting blades 4 as shown at 5. Each section of the shank 3 is semi-circular in cross section and is provided at one end with a head portion, which, when the sections are closed to an operative position form the angular head 6, whereby a brace of any suitable form may be applied to the shank to rotate the cutting blades. Each of the blades 4 is provided with outwardly and downwardly extending cutting edges 7 which when rotated will cut a smooth tapering countersink adapted for the reception of the head of a bolt or rivet.
In using my improved drill, the sections are first swung to the open position shown in dotted lines in Fig, 1. The cutting blades 4 are then inserted in through an opening until they can be opened by bring-- ing the sections of the shank 3 to their closed position, a brace is then applied to the head 6 and manipulated to rotate the cutting blades. It will be understood that the shank 3, may be rectangular or any other suitable shape.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
In a tool of the class described, the combination of a sectional shank, a cutting blade formed on one end of each of said sections and at an angle thereto, a head portion formed on the other end of each of said sections and adapted to form an angular head when the sections are in a closed position, said sections being pivotally secured together at the inter-- section of the shank and cutting blades.
