To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANDREW YOUHAS, a subject of the King of Hungary, and resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Shoe-Heel Plates, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in detachable shoe heel plates for use upon boots and shoes, and adapted to serve as an ice creeper.

It is the object of my invention to provide an improved form of shoe heel plate which may be inexpensively manufactured and sold at a moderate price and which can be quickly and easily attached to or removed from the heel of a shoe and whereby when so attached the person can walk and use the same with perfect safety upon icy walks or other slippery places.

WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

As will be noted from the drawing the device consists in a heel plate 5 which is formed somewhat in the shape of a horse shoe having its free ends 66 disposed upwardly to engage the front edge of the heel of a shoe when attached thereto. The under face of the plate is provided with a series of spikes 7 of which there may be any desired number and which are so arranged as to penetrate the ice while walking thereon, in a manner to prevent slipping and falling. The plate is further provided with a series of three or more posts 8, one of which is preferably arranged at the rear and the other two on the opposite sides of the plate. The plate as well as the arrangement of these posts would obviously be of such proportions as to permit the heel of the shoe to snugly fit t-herebetween and against the shoulder ends 6 before mentioned. A pawl 9 is pivotally connected in a slot formed in the upper end of each of these posts and is provided with a spring 10 that is secured to the post and made to bear against the back of the upper end portion of the pawl so as to force its engaging point 11 forward and into the seam at the junction of the heel and upper of the shoe. The pawls are each further provided with an upwardly and outwardly disposed finger portion 12 by means of which they may readily be engaged for the detachment or the adjustment of the device to the heel as will be obviously apparent.

From the foregoing it will be noted that the construction of the device permits of its quick and convenient attachment to a heel in a manner to be held by the engagement of the several spring actuated pawls until such times as they are manually disengaged for the detachment of the plate, thereby affording a heel plate which may be used in case of an emergency for outdoor travel during slippery weather, and can easily be removed upon entering the house.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A detachable shoe heel plate comprising a plate to engage the under edge portion of the heel and having its forward edge disposed upwardly to engage the forward side of the heel and provided with a series of spikes on the under side, a series of upwardly disposed guide posts formed on the plate to engage the outer sides of a heel, pawls pivotally connected in said posts and having extended points to engage the seam of the heel of a shoe, and bearing outwardly disposed finger ends, and springs secured to said posts to normally engage and force the said pawls inwardly for engagement with the said shoe.
