BOTTLE SEAL OR CLOSURE.
Patented Get. 22, MM2.
To all lwhom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMEs Pnownr'r, a citizen of the United States, A residing at Philadelphia, in the county ofPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle Seals or Closures, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to bottle seals 0I: closures primarily designed for sealing or closing the mouths of milk jars .and like receptacles, the object of the invention being to provide a seal or closure of the cap type which may be applied to securely seal the jar against the access of air, moisture and insects and yet may be readily removed and reapplied as occasion requires for the discharge of a portion of the contents of the bottle and the sealing of the bottle to preserve the remainder of the contents.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sealing cap which will frictionally grip the bead of the jar sufiiciently to hold it against casual displacement, while permitting it to be readily applied and removed by an up or down sliding motion.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view showing the application of the invention to a milk jar. Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse section through the jar andcap. Fig.,3 is a detail vertical section on an enlarged scale through a portion of the mouth .of the jar and the gripping portion of the cap flange. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the cap. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the cap is formed.
The cap comprisesa circular top or crown portion l made of sheet metal and having a pendent annular or continuous flange 2. The flange 2 is continuously corrugated or has a wavy or fiuted contour throughout, the inwardly projecting portions 3 of the corrugations forming gripping surfaces to frictionally engage the bead 4 of the mouth of a milk jar or other similar receptacle 5.
The fiange is of sufiicient resiliency to adapt the bearing surfaces 3 to yield and react to slide over the bead 4 when the cap is applied by forcing it downward under pressure, so that said bearing surfaces will conform to the contour of the bead and grip the same with sufcient firmness to hold the cap under alll conditions from casual displacement. bearing acton, the bearing surfaces are pref# erably flattened from av truly arcuate shape by which they are strengthened and reinforced tof increase their resilient pressure. The lower edge 6 of the Hange is also pref erablyy of a corrugated, wavy or fiuted outline, being formed with lips or depending portions 7 in line with the bearing surfaces, thus, increasing the depth of the latter. These lips conform to the shape of the bearing surfaces and are bent inwardly lslightly so as to engage beneath the point of greatest diameter of the bead, to further increase the holding action'of the cap.
In practice, thecap may be made of spring sheet metal? or other suitable material, and is designed particularly for use on milk bottles and other receptacles which are occasionally opened for the discharge of a portion of thelr contents and sealed for the preserva-tion of the remainder of the contents. Such receptacles may be opened and closed a number of times before the contents is fully exhausted, and a seal must, therefore, be provided which, while inexpensive of construction, may be applied and removed with facility without injury there# to or impairing its sealing qualities. My invention provides a cap or seal which possesses these desirable advantages, and one which may be preserved and transferred from day to day from one bottle to another to take the place of the usual inefficient and insanitary paper seal commonly employed. In Vthis respect my invention diers radically from corrugated ca s of that character which are positively astened or locked in sealing position upon the container, which require the use of an extracting tool In order to secure an. effective for their removal, and which are designed i cap to seal the jar or receptacle hermetica ly A bottle cap stamped from sheet metalA and comprising a crown portion formed with a dependlng Hange, sa1d-lange being provided along its lower edge at regular intervals with spaced segmental lips and having its body portion formed with semi-elliptical indentations between its top and bottom edges and in axial alinement with said lips, whereby the flange is iuted or corrugated throughout its circumference, the indentations or inwardly extending portions of said corrugations being slightly attened to provide gripping surfaces and the depending portions of the corrugations ar-k ranged to merge into the lips, the latter being longitudinally and transversely curved and projected inwardly to provide horizontal gripping projections in line with the vertical gripping surfaces.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES PROWETT.
