Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 2'25 may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paxinos, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Sign- Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is a simple, durable and efiicient construction of sign post designed to be placed at the forks of a road or at intersections of roads or in other places where it is desired to designate direction, and the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall her inafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sign post constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of the post; Fig. 3 is a. horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the sign boards or plates.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the post proper which is tubular, as shown, and which may be formed of any desired metal or other substance or material, being preferably composed of galvanized sheet steel, rolled into tubular form. The lower end of the post 1 is formed with a plurality of outwardly projecting feet 2 integrally connected thereto and together constituting a base, whereby the post may be securely held upright.

The post 1 is provided at its upper end with any desired number of longitudinally disposed slots 3 opening at the upper edge of the post and of any length.

Each of the plates 4 is formed at one end with two oppositely bent lugs 5 and with a recess 6 in one of said lugs at the juncture thereof with the main body portion of the plate. By this means, the plates may he slipped down into the slots 3 and held in proper position projecting out radially from the post. In order to secure the plates 4 in position, I provide a cap 7 which is formed with a collar 8 interiorly screw threaded and designed to screw on the exterior threads 9 that are formed on the slotted upper end of the post 1.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved post and the manner of assembling the parts will be apparent.

In the practical use of the device, it is set up in the desired place and the plates 4: are slipped down into the slots 3, the cap 7 being finally screwed on the upper end of the post so as to close the upper end of the slots and prevent the detachment of the sign boards or plates 4.

While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.

What I claim is A cylindrical tubular post provided at one end with a plurality of longitudinally disposed slots, a sign plate formed at one end with a transverse slot, said slot extending to the lower edge of said plate, oppositely extending lugs formed on the said plate adjacent the said slot, the said plate being adapted to be slipped down into a slot in the post with the lugs within the post the said lugs being curved to conform with the inner wall of the said post and a cap secured to the up per end of the post and closing the upper ends of said slots.
