Description

` with one of my WILLIAM .nj RUSSELL, or
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters PavtentNo. 104,066, dated Juno 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN sementi COLLARS FOR LAMPS.
The Schedule referre to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM Il. city of Brooklyn, county of Kings a York, have invented a certain Im Collars for Lamps, of which th truc, and exact description of tl ing had to the accompanying d1 t-his specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. perspective vicw of a l ollar constructed according to my invention. A
Figure-2 is a bottom view of the same. i
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a burner furnished collars.
perspective view of r attached.
RUssnLn, of the nd State of New provement in Screwe following is a full, 1e same, reference be- 'awing forming part of Figure 4 is a collar and bnrne There has lon a lamp with my lampLmanntctnrers f securing collars to Iy employed of cemcnting them er, and dil'ferent inventors have of accomplishing this by formeck and a corresponding thread connect the parts by screwing but, as it is practically impossible .to nt by any of the methods heretofore different devices have nevel' come in their places by plast tried to lind a way ing a thread on the n in the collar, so as to them together; make a tight joi employed, ,these into use.
The obj ficnlty, an fastened on the oil-reservo' cement, and at'the same time be perfectly secure from the'liability of leakage; and to this end a flange is added to the ordinary screw-collar, which admits of a packing-ring being placed between the top of the res` ervoir and the said flange. This etlectually prevents any chance of leakage, which is always likely to occur in screw-collar lamps unless, cement is used.
Figure l shows my improved collar, which, in detail, consists of a flange, a, a spiral groored orthreaded tube, b, and a shorter tubo, c, in which is ont a femalescrew thread in the usual manner.
Between this and the outer tube is a space or cavity, d, which maybe left large enough to allow packing material to be placed therein.
In using this collar, all that is required to hold it Secure mld make it tight enough to prevent leakage, is to procnreawasher of packing material not affected' by the oil to be used, such as felt, cloth, leather, puper, or other similar substance, thoroughly saturated with parafline, stearine-wafc, or other analogous ingredient, and screw the collar onto a lamp that hns a screw pressed, cnt, or otherwise -formed on its neck, with the said washer c interposed between the top ot' the body of the lamp and the llange a, as shown in 4 Although, as before stated in thc space d, tlnngc a and th packing may bc inserted yet the best place is that between the c top of thelamp, as thatV portion of the lamp is always smooth and at a suitable anglo to the neck, so thatthe washer will always keep the oil from leaking; but if the packing is placed up in the space inside the collar, it is necessary that the top of the neck be carefully ground off, as this po'rt-ion of the lamp is always left rough and ragged when it leaves the mold.
In View of this, the advantage of a llauge like that shown in my collar is at once apparent, as it saves the trouble and expense of grinding the top of the neck smooth, and the large amount of breakage incidental to this operation.
It is obvious that the collar may be changed in some respects withontvarying the character of my invention, by using tw or more short grooves instead of one long one; or, in place of a spiral groove or screw-thread, lugs or projections may be formed inside of the collar, ot' such shape and position as will allow them to enter agroove or grooves in the neck of the lamp.
I am aware that it is not new to form a screw on the neck of a. lamp, and a corresponding spiral groove in a collar to iitsnid thread; also, that the use of a. packing-ring, diterently applied, is old, and that fruit-- jar caps have been furnished with flanges t0 hold the packing. None of these points do I claim, broadly; but
Whatl do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, as a new article of manufacturelhc lamp-collar herein Shown, having the sh0rtthreadcd tube c to receiy'e the burner, the spiral grcovcd tube b tolit the neck, and thc flange a to secure the packing, the purpose set forth.
This sl'reoification of my invention signed this 12th day ot' February, 1870.
