To all whom it may concern:

lle it known that I, JAMES \V. llAnmroN, a citizen of the Unitedbltates. residing at Chicago. in the county of (ook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful improvements in Collapsible Suitllangers, of which the following is a specitication.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a device to be used for hanging garments or wearing apparel, but is more particularly intended to be employed for hanging men's suits, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the constrm tion, novel arrangement. and ope 'ation of the various parts thereof. as will be herein after more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The principal object of the invcntii-n. is to provide a collapsib e hanger l'or suits and other garnn-nts. which slall be simple and inexpensive in coma ruction. strong. durable. and etfective in ope ation, and so made that its parts may he foideil when not in use into a compact form. yet can be readily extended to their operative positions and automatiially locked in such positions so as to prevent them accidentally collapsing.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger of the above named general chara ter. which shall so support the. garments as to prevent them becoming creased and also in such a manner that they will not readily slide otl or become displaced from the parts of the hanger on which they are hung.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

The reference numeral 10, designates the main supporting members of the hanger which are .)i'eferably made of sheet metal stamped or formed into channel or shell-like shape, with their cavities presented downwardly when the device is in use, and of any desired configuration in outlines, but by preference substantially as shown in Figs. 1, and it. of the drawing. Each of the men'ibers It is provided on each of its sides at the 'lower portion of its end adjacent to the other member with a transversely apertured extension 11, which overlie one anothe and are pivotally joined together by means of a bolt or pivot '12, which is passed through the. openings in said extensions. ()ne of the members 10, is provided at the upper portion of its straight edge 13, adjacent to the other one of said members with a projecting portion Ll. which is provided with a short longitudinally extended slot 15, dividing the portion 1 into parallel prongs 16. one of which is provided in its inner edge with a laterally extended recess 17, to receive the stem or shank 18, of a hook 19, by means of which the hanger may be suspended on a rod'or other elevated support. The other main or supporting member 10, is provided at the upper portion of its straight edge 13, adjacent to the just above described member with a portion 20, which projects toward the projection 14, and is also slotted as at .21, thus :torming two parallel prongs out. of which the portion 20, is is formed, one of which is provided with a laterally extended recess adapted to register with the recess 17, in one of the prongs 1.6, of the projecting portion 11. of the other lnain supporting member. that is. when said members 10, occupy their normal positions as shown in Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawing.

Pivotally mounted in the cavity of each of the members 10, and near its lower end. is a brace rod which is composed of two sections 24; and which hdve their adjacent connected together by lllfltDSiDf a. pivot 28 extended through downwardly projected apertured extensions 21,, on said ends of said sections. Above its extension 2? each of the sections-2%, and of the brace rod is provided With a right angled shoulder 28, thus forming What is Well known a fbuggy bow joint, the operation. of which is so well known to need no further explanation.

In using the device for a suit, the legs of the trousers 30., iuay be laid. across the sec tions 241- and 25, composing the brace rod and the spring 23, moved from the dotted line position, shown in Fig. 1', of the drawing, to that shown by continuous lines in said figure, when it is apparent that the said spring Will press the trousers against the brace rod and prevent the former sliding from said rod.
