ARTHUR MCOARTER, OF SALEM, OHIO.
Letters Patent N0. 104,049, (lated June 7, 1870.
IMPROVED MEAT-CHOPPER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
4the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a meat-chopper, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled inthe art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure I is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of my machine.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side view of the mechanism for rotating the meat-block.
A represents a cast-iron bed, of any suitable dimensions, round in form, and supported by legs, B B.
In the center of the bed A is a slot, and on each side thereof is a standard, C, between the upper ends of which is pivoted an arm, D, which passes down -through the slot in the bed, and is itself slotted below said bed, as shown in tig. 1.
E is the meat-block, provided on its under side with a recess, in which the bed A ts, the meat-block resting upon said bed, and the standards projectingr up through a hole in the center of the block.
rlhe meat-block E is provided with an upward-projecting rim or hopper,
A casing, H,placed around and over the standards G C, said casing having in its top an opening large enough for the upper end of the arm D to project and vibrate or oscillate from side to side.
On the upper end of the arm D is placed a head, .'i', having four arms, I I, extending two and two in opposite directions, as shown in fig. 2.
' lo the outer ends ofthe arms I I are attached the knives K K, which have a sharp cutting-edge extending on three sides, namely, the under side and both ends. .These knives are attached to the arms I, at a suitable anglo, as shown in tig. 1. f
lheknives K K receive the required oscillating motion in the following manner:
On the under side of the bed A, on one sido, is attached a plate, L, having two downward-projecting posts, M, in which a shaft, a, has its bearings.
On the outer end of this shaft is placed a cog-` whcel, N, turned by a crank, O.
This cog-wheel gears with a' small pinion, b, upon the outer end of a shaft, d, which has its bearings iu the lower ends of the posts M, and is at its inner end provided witha balance-wheel, I.
This balance-wheel is provided with a stud or pin, e, passing through the slotted end of the arm D, thus giving to said arm, with its head and knives, an 0scillating motion.
Upon the shaft a is placed a four-pointed cam, j',
which raises a pawl, g, pivoted on a shaft, t, in a slot on the plate L.
The cam fdoes not come in immediate contact with said pawl, but operates upon a friction-roller, h, attached to the side thereof, so that, as. soon as said rollerl has passed one of the points on' said campa spring, 7.', can throw it down again.
The upper end of the pawl g operates, when it is raised by the-cam j', a ratchet-wheel, n1, attached to the side of a cog-wheel, n, on the shaft 1i, and this cog-wheel gearing with acircular cog-wheel, 1), on the under side of the meat-block, and thus the necessary rotating motion is communicated to said block.
The cam j, being four-pointed,`does not give the block a continuous motion, but moves it only at the instant when all the knives are raised up from the block, that is, in the middle of the oscillating motion, or just when the motion is half finished.
To the casing H is attached an arm, It, having at its outer' end a scraper or plow, S, for the purpose of turning the meat from the side of the hopper or rim G.
` Having thus fully described my invention,
vWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letl. The three-edged knives K K,attached to the arms I 1,-which project from the head J, placed on the upper end of the oscillating `arm D, substantially as herein set forth.
` 2. rlhe arrangement of. the bed A, standards C G, meat-block E, and hopper G, substantially as shown and described.
The arrangement of the slotted arm D, stud e, lJalance-wheel I), shafts a d, pinion b, cog-wheel N, and crank O, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The arrangement of the 'shaft fi, cog-wheel n, ratchet-whecl au, pawl g, roller h, spring 7.1, and cam f, all as described, for giving thc meat-block an inter- ;nittent rotary motion, substantially as herein set orth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, 1870.
ARTHUR MCCARTER.
