Specification 6f Letters Patent.

Application filed August 21, 1911. Serial No. 645,138.
To all 'lZf/ttH/n it may com-(W1 Be it known that l, War/ran ll. LA l nvnn, a citizen of the United States, r siding at Baltimore city, in the State of lilaryland, have .inventtal certain new and useful improvements in (lilo-'lip Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to one tip holders, and consists in the novel and advantageous construction hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tip end portion of 'a one with the tip holder and tip applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view 01 the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view 01? the same cut. on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a pt'l'SPPtfllVO view of a portion of the tip-engagingmember of the holder construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred. to in the following description and indi cated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
The tip holder construction consists of a tubular member 1 having alongitudinally disposed threaded bore 2 and also having exterior fins 3. This member is inserted in a socket formed in the smaller end of a one so that the tins 3 project into the material of which the one is formed and serve as means for holding the member 1 against rotation in the cue. The tip holding member is formed from a blank of sheet. material. The
shank portions 5 of said blank are first concavcd, then folded toward each other at the pointti, whereby the opposite side portions of the shank thus t'ormed are adapted to spring outwardly with relation to each other. The shank thus formed is provided upon its outer side with a thread which is adapted to engage the thread in the bore 2 ot' the mei'nber l. at the free ends of the shank portions of the blank the material 7 is bent in opposite directions forming shoulders which are adapted to rest flat against the outer end of the member 1 and the small end of the cue. At the outer portions of the shoulders 7 the material is bent upwardly forniing'flanges 8 which ane semi-circular and which are provided at their upper edge; with teeth 9 which are slightly inwardly disposed. The tip 10 is adaptedto be inserted between the toothed flanges 8 with its inner face bearing directly against.- the outer faces of the-shoulders 7. The shank portions 5 are then screwed into the bore 2 of the member 1 and thus the outer end portions of the said shanks are drawn toward each other, whereby their teeth 9 are caused lo bite into the sides of the tip 10 and securely hold the same in position.
it is obvious that by reversing" tlnoperalion above described the tip holding tiltti'h her may be removed from the mom e! 1; also the tip may be removed from the said holding member and another tip put in its place.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that so long as the tip-holding member avangtal as shown in Fig. 2 in the tubular member 1. the tip it) will be strongly held in said holding member without liability of the tip being casually displaced: and it will also be manifest that because of the shoulders 7 of the tip-holding member being backed by the tube 1 and the cue, the ordinary use of the cue and its tip is not. at tended by the imposition of strain on the tip holding member, and hence said member is likely to last quite as long as the remainder of the cue.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
The combination of a one having a socket in its smaller end, an interior-1y threaded tubular member arranged in said socket and having'its outer end arranged flush with the small end of the cue, a tip holding member bent upon itself and having exterior-1y threaded shank portions disposed in and engaged with the threaded tubular member and also having semicircular shoulders resting flat against the outer end of'the tubular member and the small end of the cue and backed by the same and also having semicircular flanges on said shoulders and flush with the side of the cue, and inwardly directed teeth on said flanges, and a tip resting against the shoulders and within the flanges of the tip holding member and receiving the teeth on the said flanges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
