- STOVEPIPE AND COLLAR HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known thatl, FLOYD S: D1vAN,'a
citizen of the United States, residing""at3 Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe and Collar Holdersyand I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame; i
This invention is of that class of devices intended for holding the stove pipe within the chimney and the adjacent elbow within the outermost length of stove pipe, and also for holding the collar upon said length when all parts are assembled; and the object of the same is to improve such a device in the details which will appear below.
The following specification sets forth the preferred manner of carrying out my invention as illustrated in the drawings wherein Figure- 1 is 'a verticalsection through the stove pipe hole of a chimney, showing this improved holder as used for locking the" outermost pipe section therein with the stove pipe collar around it, and for looking the elbow to said section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the stove pipe hole in the chimney, illustrating the use of my holder for locking the stove pipe therein against movement in either direction. Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of the principal member of this improved holder.
In the drawings the letter W designates a wall having a hole into which the stove pipe S is to lead, and E is an elbow at the inner end of this pipe section S by which the latter is connected with an upright pipe section only partly illustrated and not necessary to describe herein. The wall W is indicated as of brick, but of course it may be a thinner or thicker wall and of other construction, although generally the hole leads into the flue of a chimney so that the products of combustion may pass out. The outer end of the pipe section S is usually held by some means within the hole in the wall and surrounded by a collar for purposes of ornamentation, and it is the object of the present invention to hold all these parts properly assembled and also to hold the elbow E from slipping off the section S.
Specification of LettersPatcnt. Application filed September 21,1911. Serial No. 650,495.
Coming now more particularly to the I Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
if 1 present invention, the principal portion of my device comprises a body member 1 preferably made of rather stiff strap iron bent at its inner end i'nto a spring hook 2 about as shown so that it, may be straightened ,out a little if the wall is unusually thick. The other end of this strap iron body is bent downward rather sharply in-a right angle'3, bent inward rather sharply in a second right angle 4 into what might be called "a foot 5 standing at right angles to the body member 1, and finally bent downward in a third right angle 6 into what might-be called a 'toe 7 which stands some little distance below the body member 1 and is intended to rest against the front face of the wall W. These bends leave a substantially rectangular space behind the foot 5, which space I preferably a make ofa size to receive a nut 10 and hold it against rotation. The collar 12 which is usually stamped up fromfmetal is a little against'the face-of the wall and its-raised centerbeing around the pipe section S; and thefoot 5 at the outer end of the body member rests against the inner face of the raised center of this collar, below the pipe, while the toe 7 rests against the front face of the wall. Finally a screw hook 13 is inserted through the collar 12 and the foot of the body member, and engaged with the nut; and when this screw member is tightened up it will be clear that all parts will be drawn closer together and yet the toe 7 will prevent the raised center of the collarwhich has no support-from being crushed or indented if the screw member is set up too tight. In theassembling of parts, those already described are by preference put in first.
' Toward the inner end of the body member 1, a tongue 15 is cut therefrom and bent upward and forward and then downward as at 18 as best seen in Fig. 5, and after the parts have been assembled as described above the stove pipe S is inserted through the collar 12 and rests against this tongue. If the elbow E is to be locked in place, it is inclosed in a wire ring 16 having a hook 16 as seen in Fig. 1, and after the elbow has been inserted into the outer end of the pipe section S, a coiled spring 17 is engaged with the hooks 16 and 13 as there illustrated to hold all parts in place.
An import-ant feature of the invention is the manner of securing the pipe section S dished as shown, its periphery resting fiat to the body member 1, and this consists in bendingthe end of the stove pipe upward into a lip as shown at 19 at one point, and
then after the pipe has been pushed through combination with a stove pipe section whose extremity is adapted to pass into a hole in a wall, and a dished collar surrounding said section over the outer end of said hole; of a holder made of strap iron and adapted to extend through the hole and having its inner end bent into a hook resting against the inner face of the wall, means on its body for engaging the inner extremity of said pipe section, and its outer end bent downward at right angles within said collar into a foot, thence toward the wall at right angles, and thence again downward into a toe resting against the outer face of the wall, a nut held from rotation within the angular space behind said foot, and a screw member passing through said collar and foot and engaging said nut for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a stove pipe section whose extremity is adapted to pass into a hole in a wall and is bent inward into a li a at one point, and a dished collar surrounding said section over the outer end of said hole; of a holder made of strap iron and adapted to extend through the hole alon ide the section and having its inner en bent into a hook resting against the inner face of the wall, the holder having a tongue struck from its body and bent upward thence forward and downward into a lip adapted to engage that on the section, and the holder also having its outer end bent downward into a foot and thence inward at right angles to the foot and into contact with the outer face of the wall, the foot resting within said collar at this time, and a screw member connecting the foot and collar, for the purpose set fort-h.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
