To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIGKH. RAABE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and 1niproved Adjustable Spring-Bearer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
This invention relates to a new and improved spring-bearing roll for printing presses, to draw off the paper without breaking, and to allow for several thicknesses of paper on the roll.
An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved spring bearer for a roll, which will yield under pressure, and when juxtaposed to a corresponding bearer on another roll, will grip the paper coming from the press, so as to draw it ofl evenly without danger of breaking.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device which will besimple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and positive in its action.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views, and in which- Figure'l is a side view in elevation, partly in section to show the underlying structure; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the juxtaposed rolls, with one of the rolls in section.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate a pair of draw-oft rolls, which are adapted to remove the paper from the printing press, and are mounted on parallellyarranged shafts 3 and 4. On each of the rolls, there is provided a plurality of spring bearers 5, arranged at suitable spaced intervals and adapted to cooperate in pairs with each other.
As shown, the rolls are constructed of tubes 6, connected to hubs 7 mounted on the shafts 3 and at by means of radiating spokes 8. it is to be noted that the rolls are thick ened internally in a c' culatr manner, as at 9, to allow for a circumferential rah-bet or groove 10, one of which is provided for each of the spring bearers 5. The spring bearers 5 are preferably in the form of a ring composed of a plurality of sections 11 and 12 spaced apart from each other a suflicient distance to permit relative movement with respect to each other and with respect to the cylindrical rolls. The sections 11 and 12 are held in position on the rolls by means of screws 13, which are fixedly secured to the rolls and are countersunk in the sections 11 and 12, so as to have a limited play in the sockets formed for them in the sections 11 and 12;
in order to normally hold the sections 11 and 12 spread apart and in their outer position, there are provided springs 14, which bear on the internal surfaces of the sections Hand 12. and which are'set in sockets 15 provided for them in the tubular portion of the rolls.
The utility of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. The sheet of paper coming from the printing-pressis gripped between the cooperating pairs of spring bearers 5, so that it will yield under an excessive force, doing away with the tearing of the paper, and even permitting several layers of the paper to be' wound on one or the other of the rolls. This is brought about by the spring bearers 5 yielding radially when a-pressure is brought to bear upon them. 1
While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a roll having a tubular outer shell thickened at longitudinally-spaced intervals, with circumferential grooves located in the surface thereof at the thickened portions, annular sections movably mounted in said grooves, said annular sections having openings therein, screws passing through said openings and fixedly secured to said roll so as to permit a limited relative movement of said sections with respect to said roll, said roll having sockets therein, and springs in said sockets, bearing against the inner surfaces of said sections so as to tend to normally press said sections outwardly.
2. The combination of a roll provided with a peripheral groove, bearers of permanent arcuate form positioned within the said groove, aplurality of springs positioned between the bearers and the said roll, together with means secured to the roll and engaging the said bearers whereby the said bearers may be moved adjacent the roll, thereby compressing the springs, movement of the bearers in the opposite direction being determined by the said means.
3. The combination of a roll provided with a peripheral groove, bearers of arcuate form positioned within the groove, the said bearers together forming a structure concentric with the roll, a plurality of sockets in the roll and communicating with the groove, springs located within the sockets and bearing against the said bearers, a, plurality of holes in the bearers, together with fastening devices extending through the holes and into engagement with the roll whereby the position of the said bearers with respect to the roll is determined.
4. The combination of a plurality of rolls, each roll being provided with a peripheral groove, arcuate bearers in each of the grooves, a plurality of resilient means between each roll and each bearer, and other means carried by each roll and engaging each of the bearers'whereby movement of the bearers against the pressure of the springs is permitted, the bearers on each of the rolls being in engagement with the corresponding bearers of the other roll.
5. The combination of a plurality of rolls, a plurality of peripheral grooves in each roll, a plurality of bearers in each groove, a plurality of resilient means between each roll and each bearer, together with a plurality offastening means earned by each roll at the bottom of the groove and extending into engagement with the bearers whereby the rolls and the bearers are positioned, the bearers in one roll being in contact with the bearers in the other roll whereby material passed between the rolls will be engaged between the bearers.
6. The combination of a roll having a peripheral groove therein, a plurality of sockets within the groove, a spring contained in each socket, a plurality of arcuate bearers, each of fixed curvature, positioned within the groove, each bearer being provided with holes, together with fastening means extending through each of the holes and into fixed engagement with the roll whereby, when pressure is applied to the outside of the bearer, the same may move with respect to the roll against the pressure of the springs, the return movement of the bearers being determined by the saidfastenin'g means.
7. The combination of an annular roll provided with a groove, a plurality of bearers mounted within the groove, each bearer having generally a semicircular form, screws mounted on the said roll and extending loosely through the said bearers for the purpose of preventing the removal of the said bearers from the said groove, together with resilient members interposed between the bottom of the groove and the said bearers.
8. The combination of a roll provided with a peripheral groove and further provided with sockets merging into the said groove, springs located within the said sockets and extending therefrom into the said groove, bearers of arcuate form located within the said groove and engaging the said springs, the said bearers being provided with holes, and fastening members mounted upon saidroll and extending through said holes for-the purpose of preventing the removal of said bearers from said groove.
