Abstract

Rollers.-An expanding reel, bar, or core for winding cloth &c. is constructed with a spindle provided at intervals or throughout its length with enlarged portions constituting one or more peripheral eccentric surfaces between which and the reel or reel-shell a roller is arranged to clutch or declutch these parts by a small relative movement. The eccentric surface may be provided in the interior of the reel shell instead of on the spindle. The rollers may extend through end flanges mounted on the spindle and be provided with slots following the contours of the eccentric parts. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which three eccentric portions b<2> are formed on the spindle b, and rollers c inserted between these and the reel shell a<1>. The surfaces and. the rollers may be toothed or serrated, and, as shown in Fig. 4, the rollers may act to force spring strips f of steel or brass outwards to grip the interior of the reel, or may act to expand a resilient split band embracing the spindle. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement adapted to clutch in either direction of movement, and Fig. 7 an arrangement in which the eccentric surfaces are formed in the reel shell.
