JOSEPH ENGLAENDER, OIE SEDALIA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORTO HIMSEIIF AND EUGENE LUNGSTRAS, OE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 104,000, dated J-lme 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN H ORSE-COLLARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whonm't mag/j concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH ENGLAENDER, of Sedalia,'in the count-yof Pettis and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the manner of attaching the traces and other straps or band of harness to the collar directly without the use of haines, and to the arrangement of the collar itself, so as to be properly adjustable and wear easily upon the neck of the draft animal.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use my said invention, I will now more fully describe the same, referring to the accompanying-- Figure l as a front elevation; to
Figure 2 as a top plan; and to Figure 3 as a part perspective elevation, showing the lower securing or lock-plate and its connections with the collar ends; to
Figure 4 as asectiou at line n: 1, showing the stud'- ing or packing of the collar.
In said gures-Q A represents the body of the collar, composed of a wooden o r similar stuiing, A', extending to the line x y and forming a solid padding, which is enveloped in the leather lining A2; The lining extends beyond the top of `the Wood stuiing to form a neck-yoke to rest upon the neck of the animal. The lining parts are joined by straps. and buckles a".
A suitable padding is placed within the lining A2 above the woodstuiing A1; and, furthermore, to form an easy rest on the neck, a padding-piece, B, is placed under the joined-end A'of the main collar. VThis padding-piece is suitablyy secured by straps, as indicated in the gures.
Firmly secured to the front of the collar halves A by screws or similar means, I arrange the hameplates C usually of iron.
At their upper ends are suitable buckles, o, Vby which a strap, c', is arranged to connect the two plates C, andthus again join both halves ofthe collar.
.Lo the haine-plates, and through them into the body ofthe collar A, I secure, inproper manner, the rings I or loops D, through which the reins of the harness' may pass and similarly the snap-hooks E are fastened for the traces either directly or by suitable laps or staples; and all the other necessary or usual rings or hooks, or other attachments, may readily be made through the hame-plates with the collar A, by driving the liooks or ring prongs into the Wood packing of the collar, and using the hame-plate as an exterior strengthening. strip.
'Ihe connection-between the collar` halves at the bottom is inthe manner following:
Each partA has a 4proper staple, F, secured to it, and also a plate, G, the latter ending just below the 'end of the" llame-plates C. "One of the plates G supports a staple-hinge, g, which secures the jointplate H to the corresponding part of the collar. v A pin, h, at the front end of the joint-plate, when the parts are in connection, drops into one of the holes g of the plate G on the opposite collar half.
The plate H has the mort-ises lt', so 'that when the parts are joined the staples F project partly above the plateG, passing through the mortisesthereof. An
adjustment is made by using such of the mortises of plate H as are required. p i
At the lower ends of -the hanne-plates C are the buckles t', connecting with a strap, I. This strap will complete the joint between-all pa1ts,by-passing above the joint-plate H through the staples F, as indicated in fig. l. The upper surface of the haine-plates is suitably anged to receive the strap I and lit neatlyr .about the'lower end of the collar.
The parts thus joined are securely held against :the greatest strains that are usual upon harnessing, and the collarthus'formed is durable and economical.
Having thus fully described my invention,v
What I claim, is-
The parts A of the collar joined by plate H, combinedwith staples F, plates G, and straps I, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set i my hand in the presence of- JOSEPH ENGLAENDER. Witnesses:
FRIEDOLIN BAUER, EWALD LUNcsraAs.
