Description

UNITED STATES JeMES R. FINLY, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
DELPHI, ASSIGNOR or oNn-IIALF TO RILEY'OOBLE, OF CARROLL COUNTY, INDIANA.
'HAME-VFASTIIENER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,968, dated May 1, less.
' Application filed October 21,1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern y Be it known that I, J. It, FINLY, of Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in flame-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the followingis 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewof the improved attachment complete. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of: the trace-coupling. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section, showing the split hook secured to a hame, which is in section. Fig. 4 is aside view of a trace and the tracecoupling attached thereto.
This invention relates to means for readily.
and securely attaching traces to the hames; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel self-coupling clip, in combination with a hook which is of peculiar shape, and which is applied to the hame, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
The letter A designates a hame, which may be made in the usual well-known manner. In place of and at the usual locality of the common hame-hook or snap-eye, I apply rigidly to the heme avertically-split coupling-ring, B.
This ring B is formed on or suitably secured I to a plate, 0, which is oblong and concave laterally and transversely, and the coupling-ring isconstructed with a vertical slot, a, which separates its two ends and forms a passage fora coupling-clip, F, which will interlock with said ring, and which will under all ordi-. nary circumstances prevent casual detachment of the parts.
E designates a trace, which has secured to itsend a clip, F, adapted to engage with the Vertically-split couplin g-ring B. This traceclip F is of peculiar construction, and it is especially adapted for coupling with the vertically-split ring B on the heme A. The traceclip is composed of a shank, which is riveted between the two strips forming the trace E.
The part protruding beyond the end of the trace has a transversely-slotted neck, the top portion of which terminates in a circular head I or cap, a. The bottom portion has shoulders at c c and a contracted portion or tongue, d, terminating ina short cylindrical pivot, b, which is united to the cap a. The width of the contracted portion at is slightly less than the space a between the ends of the split coupling-ring B. Thus by adjusting this portiondso that it will register with the said space, and dropping it down, the pintle b can be brought within. the coupling-ring B, thus effecting a coupling between the trace and the heme. The split or space a between the ends of the couplingring is in front. Consequently when the trace is drawn back in its normal position it will be impossible for the parts to casually uncouple.
To effect an uncoupling the clip F must be 7 coupled by hand.
It will be seen that I construct the verticallysplit hame-ringor socket-piece Bwith an oblong plate, O, which is especially adapted, by reason of its vertical and lateral curvature, to be applied to a hame, A, thus allowing the said hams-ring or socket-piece to be rigidly secured to a; hame.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combined hame and trace fastener, consisting of the vertically-split hame-ring and concave plate 0, in combination with a traceclip formed of a transversely-slotted portion having a pivotal extremity and a contracted portion, 01, adapted to pass the slit between 'the ends of said split ring, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JAMES REINLY.
