PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 191 2.
Application filed April 30, 1912. Serial No. 694,078.
and State of Texas, have invented certain: new and useful Improvements in Plows, of;
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows.
The object of the invention is to provide a plow of the character described, so constructed that the pitch of the plow sharemav be readily varied so that the implement will be suitable for deep or shallow plowing, as may be desired.
Another object of the invention resides in 'the )revision of means whereb the share may be readily adjusted upon the supporting stock.
A further feature resides in the provision of means for steadying the plow against lateral movement.
\Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention has particul ar relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the plow beam, to the front of which the team is hitched and whose rear end curves clownwardly and serves as a support for the mechanism, hereinafter described.
To the lower end of the rear portion of the beam is'rigidly secured a runner 2. This runner i secured to the beam by means of suitable bolts and projects forwardly and rearwardly worn the beam. To the front end of this runner the lower end of the plow steel; is pivotally secured by means of a suitable bolt. This stock consists of two side members 3, 3, which are spaced some distance apart and extend a considerable distance upwardly and to the upper end of said stock, the two adjustment bars l, 4, are pivota-lly secured. These lmrs are arranged one upon each side of the downwardly curved portion of the beam and are each provided with lengthwise slots and through these slots passes a bolt- 5, which bolt passes alsothro-ugh an orifice in the beam. The free end of thls bolt is threaded and receives the nut 6, by which it is secured in position.
The numeral 7 refers to the plow share,
which is secured to the stock by means of a bolt 8, which passes through an orifice in the share and which also'passes between said side members 3, 3 of the stock and which is .securedin position by means of the nut 9.
which is screwedon to the threaded free end of the bolt. This nut may be loosened and the share adjustedupwardlyor downwardly on said stock, the bolt sliding along the space between the side members thereof.
The rear end of the runner 2 is provided with a thin blade 10, which is bolted thereon and projects a considerable distance therebeyond. This blade sinks into the ground a considerable distance and steadies the plow and prevents a sudden lateral movement thereof in case an obstruction is'encountered, by the share and conduces to the formation of a straight furrow.
To the beam are secured the usual plow handles 11, 11, which are strengthened by the braces 12, 12.
When it is desired to change the pitch of the plow share 7 the nut 6 may be loosened and the adjustment bars 4 moved in the desired direction upon the bolts 5 and said nut 6 then tightened, and as is obvious, this adjustment of said bars will vary the pitch of the share as desired. Similarly, when it is desired to elevate the share for shallow or deep plowing, the nut 9 may be loosened and said share adjusted on the stock, as hereinbefore described, and the nut 9 then tightened.
It is apparent from the herein described construction, that the plow share may be readily adjusted to accommodate to any desirablc depth to which it may be desired to plow the ground to be cultivated. I
\Vhile I have shown only one form of my invention, I hereby reserve the right to modify the structure thereof so long as I do not depart from the principle of construction as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the character described, composed of a plow beam and arunner rigidly secured thereto, a stock pivoted at its upper end of said stock and heving-a.-.slid
able engagement with the beam, a means for securing said adjustment bar against movement relativeto the beam, an adjustable share secured to the lower end of the stock, and a guide blade secured to the runner and projecting downwardly therefrom.
2. A device of the character described, composed of ,a plow beam having a downwardly extending rear end, a runner rigidly secured to said. end, a stock pivoted to the front end of said runner at its lower end, adjustment bars pivoted to the upper end of said stock and extending rearwardly and embracing the beam, one on each side, said bars each having a lengthwise slot; a suitable bolt passing through the beam and through the slots of said adjustment bars and a, means for securing said bolt in position, a share secured to said stock and being vertically adjustable relative thereto and a guide blade secured to the runner and extending downwardly therefrom.
3. A device of the character described composed of a plow beam having a downwardly extending rear end, a runner rigidly secured to said rear end, a stock consisting of two side members pivoted at their lower ends to the front end of said runner on each side and spaced apart, two adjustment bars pivoted, respectively, to the two side members forming said stock at their front end and extending rearwardly and embracing the beam, one on each side, and each of said bars being provided with a lengthwise slot, a bolt passing through an orifice in said beam and through the slots of said adjustment bars, a nut threaded on each end of said bolt, by means of which the same is secured in .position, a share and a bolt extending; through the same and through the spaces between the said members of said stock and a nut secured on said bolt and securing the same in said stock, said bolt and share being vertically adjustable relative to the stock, and a guide blade secured to the rear end of the runner and extending downwardly therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
