UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER DUEWEKE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
GAR-SEAL.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DUEWEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals, of which t-he following is a specification.
This invention relates to seals and more particularly to car seals.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient seal of this character which is constructed of a single piece of metal and in which the locking hook and tongue are completely housed so as to prevent tampering.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character having a locking tongue of spring metal which is housed and which is adapted to be engaged by a locking hook which is sprung into engagement with the tongue, the tongue being so const-ructed that it can not rise in the housing after the hook is engaged therewith, and therefore, can not be pressed out of the path of the hook.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the blank used. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the partially formed device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the completed device. Fig. l is a sectional View therethrough.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the seal comprises a strip of metal 1 which is provided with lateral wings 2 and 3 which constitute the side walls of the housing 4l. The strip is extended beyond the wings and is bent up at right angles to form an end wall 5 of the housing. This extension is then bent so as to form the top wall 6 of the housing and over which the wings 2 and 8 are bent as shown in Fig. 3. A spring tongue 7 forms a continuation of the extension and is bent diagonally across the housing from the top 6 to t-he strip l and intermediate the length of the tongue a rib S is formed by bending up the tongue, which rib extends approximately entirely across the housing from the top to the bottom so as to prevent the tongue from being elevated. The wings are provided with stamped out Specification of Letters Patent.

projections which engage beneath the top 6, as shown in Fig. 4, and which prevent the top from being depressed, to bend the rib 8 which would then permit the top to be raised and the tongue elevated. The portions of the wings 2 and 3 which overlap the top 6 are soldered together, as shown at 9, so as to prevent disconnection of these parts and to hold the housing in proper form. At the opposite end of the strip 1 from the housing a hook is formed by bending a portion of the strip back upon itself, which hook is adapted to be pushed into engagement with the tongue and be engaged thereby to lock the strip in loop form, as shown in Fig. 4. Preferably, the body of the strip adjacent the housing is provided with a hole which weakens the strip so that the same may be broken when the car is to be opened by the proper authorities.
What is claimed is l. A car seal comprising a strip of resilient metal, a hook formed at one end thereof, an open-ended housing formed in the opposite end thereof, means formed on certain walls of the housing to prevent collapse of the top thereof, a spring tongue forming a continuation of the top of the housing and projecting into t-he housing to be engaged by the hook on the free end of the strip, and means carried by the tongue and engaged with the housing to prevent disengagement of said tongue from the hook.
2. A car seal comprising a strip of resilient metal, a hook formed at one end thereof, an open-ended housing formed in the opposite end thereof, means formed on certain walls of the housing to prevent collapse of the top thereof, a spring tongue forming a continuation of the top of the housing and projecting thereinto to be engaged by t-he hook on the free end of the strip, `and a rib bent up from the tongue and adapted to engage the top of the housing to prevent the same from being raised in the housing.
3. A car seal comprising a strip of resilient metal, a hook formed at one end thereof, the opposite end of the strip being bent back upon itself to provide one wall and a top of a housing, lateral wings formed on the strip, said wings being bent up and over the top to form the side walls and retaining parts of the strip, spurs projecting from said side walls beneath the top to prevent collapse from the same, a tongue formed on the top In testimony whereof I afx my Signature and projecting into the housing for engagen presence of two Witnesses.
nient with the hook, and a rib raised from the tongue and arranged substantially in en-4 ALEX' DUEWEKE' gagement with the top to prevent raising of Witnesses:
the tongue and consequentdisengagenienn HENRY L. BUTLER,
of the same from the hook. JOSEPH A. TURNER.
