To all whom, i2; may concern' Be it known that I, WELLS MoMAsTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sound Beach, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Map-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to map-cases made of sheet metal. Its object is to provide a light strong durable map-case which shall be easily adjusted to provide for slight variations of the width of the map or the length of the roll on which the same is supported.

Further objects of the invention will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, on a reduced scale, of a map-case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section through the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a partial rear view of the body portion of the device, the end being removed.

In the drawings, designates the body portion of a map-case formed of a sheet of metal, preferably resilient and bent longitudinally to an approximately pear shape having a flattened rear face 11' and having its lower edges 12 and 13 inturned to form a longitudinal slotted opening 14. In the rear face 11 of the body portion 10 are cut invert: ed-U-shaped slots, permitting a lug 15 to be turned upwardly so as to eXtend somewhat above the flattened rear face 11, the lug 15 being pierced with an aperture 16 for enga ing with a nail or hook in the wall on which the map-case is to be supported. Adjacent the end of the body portion 10 is stamped a series of vertical dentations or ribs 17, the function of which will hereinafter appear.

The ends 20 are cupped or drawn from sheet metal, so as to have straight sides or rinis 21 and a lateral face or end 22, the peripheral portion of which is depressed or concaved at 23, Within which depression is formed a converted or outwardly-extending curved portion 24, axially pierced at 25 for the reception of the pin at the end of the map-roll, as hereinafter explained. The rim 21 may be recessed at its lower portion, as shown at 26, to permit the passage of the map therethrough. In the flattened rear face 27 of the end portion 20 is stamped a series of vertical dentations or ribs 28, corresponding in position to the ribs 17 of the body portion 10.

3O designates a map-roll on which is wound a map 31, provided with a bottom roll or bead 32 of the usual form. The roll 30 is preferably of the ordinary spring construction exemplified by the Hartshorn roll, provided at its ends with the usual pintles 33.

The device is assembled by slipping the roll 30, with the map 31 rolled thereon, into the body portion 10 and slipping over the ends of the body portion 10 the ends 20, the ribs 28 engaging with the ribs 17, so as to prevent the accidental displacement of the ends from the body portion. By reason of the plurality of interlocking ribs 17 and 28 it will be seen that the ends may be slipped to a greater or less extent over the body portion, so that the pins 33 on the roll 30 may have the proper engagement in the apertures 25 in the ends 20. By reason of the conveXed portion 24 of the lateral face of the end portion 20 the pins will be easily guided into the apertures, while by reason of the concave surrounding portion 23 the pins will not project in an unsightly manner beyond the faces of the end portions. The apertures 16 in the lugs 15 are adapted to be engaged over suitable supportingnails or the like in the wall, and it is of course understood that the slot or opening 14 at the lower edge of the body portion 10 is of such size as to prevent the passage therethrough of the bottom bead or roll 32 of the map.

It is obvious that certain mechanical changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
