UNITED STATES .PAlENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. HARMAN, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DETACHABLE FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. Harman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
While this device belongs to the class of folding bedsteads generally, my invention directly relates to a detachable folding-bedstead.
Some of the principal objects of my invention consist in providing a bedstead, the construction of which is such that when the bed is not occupied or in use, it can be folded by having the foot and head portions brought together in a compact and neat form, closely against the wall-or any desired location, where it will take up very little space. Also to provide a folding-bedstead which can be occupied with perfect safety, it having no dangerous mechanism, thereby allowing the bed to unexpectedly close and endanger the lives of the occupants. Also to provide an article of furniture as above referred to, that is susceptible of being quickly detached and the parts disconnected for storage or transportation: also, to provide a folding-bedstead that can be readily and easily handled or manipulated, further objects being to provide a bedstead as above referred to that is simplein construction; composed of few parts; is strong and durable; and one which can be manufactured at a small cost and therefore is quite inexpensive.
My invention consists essentially, referringbriefiy and in general termsto the various parts, elements or mechanical features of construction of my detachable folding-bedstead; of the foot and head portions; the detachable folding side pieces or bars, and the peculiar hinges and attachments for detachably connecting these parts; also the support for the inclosing curtains; and the minor details thereof; also the very peculiar and novel construction, arrangement and combination of these several parts, as will be hereinafter fully, elaborately, and clearly described in detail and set forth in the subjoined claims, all in accordance with the statutes in such cases made and provided therefor.
Referring to the accompanying drawings-constituting a formal part of this Specification of Letters Patent.

specification, and illustrating one form of construction for carrying out the objects and principles of my invention, and wherein the same reference letters are utilized to inclicate or point out the same parts wherever occurring throughout the several views Figure 1 is a plan view of my detachable folding bedstead, in an opened position ready for use ;-the curtain support and curtains being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view in an opened position;the curtain support and curtains being in position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partially broken away ;the curtain supports and curtains being removed. Fig. 4 is a head end view when in a folded position;-the curtain support and curtains being in position. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view-on a slightly enlarged scale ;When in a folded position; the curtain support and curtains being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the under side of a broken away portion of one of the detachable folding side pieces; showing the hinged joint. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a broken away portion of one of the corner posts or upright supports, showing the cutaway and wedge shaped recess therein; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of onev of the connecting-supports for the head end of the folding side pieces, and which rests in the wedge shaped recess in the cutaway portion of the post; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a broken away portion of the connecting bar for the head ends of the side pieces; also the head end of one of the folding side pieces which receives the arm of the connecting support and also receives the locking pin which prevents these parts from turning. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the locking-pins. Fig. 11 is a broken away inside view showing the cutaway portion of one of the foot corner posts; the foot end of one of the folding side pieces; and the locking-support for said foot end of the folding side piece; which together forms an automatic lock. Fig. 12 is, a perspective view of one of the locking-supports for connecting the foot end of the side pieces to the posts; and Fig. 13 is a plan view of the curtain support and the inclosing curtains.
In describing my said invention specifically, and referring in detail to the various parts or mechanical features of construction, which in combination make up my detachable folding bedstead, as pointed out in the drawings by means of the characters of reference as aforesaid :-A refers to the foot or front portion, and B to the head or rear portion, which may be of the design here shown or any other suitable style, provided they extend far enough outward to leave suflicient space inside for bed springs, bedding and pillows,(not here shown)when the bedstead is folded as shown in Figs. 4- and 5. a and I; refer to the two posts or upright supports of the foot and head portions re spectively; the two posts a being shorter and not extending as high as the two posts 6, so as to allow for the folding of the bedstead ;see Fig. 5. In practice, each of said four posts are intended to have the base or end-of the lower portion or leg, which rests on the floor, provided with a caster or roller, which may be of any preferred style or form and not here shown, as said caster is no part of my invention and belongs to a separate class.
Folding side-pieces or bars C, are connected at both the foot and head ends by an angle-bar c, the horizontal portion 0 of which is provided with perforations, or eyes, to which are intended in practice to have the ends of any suitable and well known form of bed springs, adapted to fold up with the bedding and bedstead when closed, connected thereto; while the vertical portion 0 thereof, will act as a bearing support or stop for the bedding when placed on said springs. laid folding side pieces, are further connected near each end by a brace-bar (Z, upon which the springs are intended to rest; thereby assisting in supporting all weight and e ualizing all strain when the bed is occupiec.
Each folding sidepiece C is provided midway its length with a hinged bearing joint 0, which allows it to break and fold in two sections: said hinged joint, which is fully and clearly shown in detail in Fig. 6,is formed by the end of one of said folding sections terminating on its underside in a lip or flange f, which fits in the groove or channel between the two lips or flanges 9, formed on the underside of the end of the other folding section; av bolt it, held in place by a countersunk head and nut,is passed through said lips or flanges of the sections upon which they turn. Said sections are each preferably formed with a flat top, extending at right angles above said lips, where they meet in shoulders forming said hinged bearing joint 0 when the bedstead is opened; which supports the sections of said foldin side pieces from all pressure from the top, yet allowing them to brealt joint and fold together when the bedstead is closed, as shown.
Upon each bolt 71, on the inside of each folding side piece next the hinged joint 6, is mounted a leg Iwhich is intended to rest on the floor and reinforce the strength of the hinged-joints; said leg having sufficient movement upon said bolt to allow the bed to be moved, and will readily swing in its place when the bed is folded,--see Figs,
ceive the wedge shaped leg Z having con vexed sides, of one of the two lockingsupports L; while arm m extending at right angles from said wedge shaped leg, is
formed with a rib or feat-her n, and when said arm of each locking-support is inserted in opening 0 in the foot end of one of the side pieces C its rib n will rest firmly in groove 0 formed in the periphery of opening 0, thus removably connecting the foot ends of said side pieces with posts a and supporting them in a locked position when the bed is opened. Opening 0 is just large enough in circumference to pass around arm m and its rib a, when the foot ends of said side pieces are turned on said arm in moving said bedstead to a folded position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, thus forming an automatic locking joint. Cutaways K are deep or long enough to allow the leg Z of the locking-supports to be removed when the parts of the bedstead are detached or disconnected for storage or transportation,
Posts Z) of head portion B, are each formed with a cutaway P having a wedge shaped concaved recess 79:--said cutaway and recess being identical with the cutaway and recess of posts a. Recess 79 receives the wedge shaped 'concaved leg 9 of connecting-support Q,-said leg being identical in form with leg Z of said locking-support. Extend ing at right angles from leg Q is an arm 1' which is provided with an eye or opening W and when said arm rests in position in opening Sshown in Fig. S,located in the head end of each of the side pieces C adapted to receive it, opening 1" will register in a-linement with a similar eye or opening a passing through this end of the side pieces, thus forming a continuous opening through said end of the side pieces also said arm, which receives the locking-pin zf,of the same contour as openings 1 and s;the head of said pin retaining it in position until removed to allow of said head ends of side pieces O to turn on arms 0 of said connecting supports, when said bedstead with its springs and bedding is folded ;see Figs. 4 and 5. Cutaways P are deep or long enough to allow the leg (7 of the connecting-supports to be removed when the parts of the bedstead are detached or disconnected for storage or transportation.
Curtain support T is formed with suitable eyes or openings 16, adapted to fit snugly over and around posts 5 and rest on the top of head portion Bas clearly shown-and is provided with a supporting rail or rod it upon which are hung the curtains U in the usual manner which are of suitable mate rial, meeting in the center and inclose the bedstead when folded, yet may be moved or run around on said rod to either side of said bedstead when in an open position, it being obvious that said curtain-support and curtains can readily be removed when so desired; also, that instead of curtains any appropriate form of casing or boxing may be employed for inclosing said bedstead when folded.
Although in practice my bedstead is to be so constructed that all weight will be evenly distributed when folded, a hook a may be secured to posts a near the top, which engages the staple or eye w in each post 7), when the bedstead is folded,as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5;posts a of course being of a height to pass and rest under said curtain support.
Having now described my detachable folding bedsteadin connection with the illustrations,-as new and as my invention:
I claim 1. In a folding bedstead the combination,of detachable side pieces adapted to break or fold; a detachable foot-portion having an automatic locking connection with the ends of said side pieces; a detachable head-portion having a hinged connection with the opposite ends of said side pieces; and a curtain-support provided with curtains for inclosing said bedstead when folded; all substantially as and for the purposes described.
