APPARATUS FOR STRAINING LIQUIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application filed October 23, 1909. Serial-No. 524,137.
" To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK BAILEY and FREDERICK HENRY J ACKBON, both subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of 64 Bankside, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Apparatus for Straining Liqulds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in straining water or other llquid containing solid substances, as for example river water containing weeds, straw and the like, the apparatus being constructed and operated in such a manner as to render the straining surfaces self-cleansing.
In the specification of our United States in Patent No. 943,908, dated December 21, 1909,
we have described a self-cleansing strainer wherein a strainer wheel is rotated within a casing formed with inlet and outlet chambers, and our present invention consists in an improved construction of packing-ring which is formed in segments with a View to facilitating the examination and removal thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the stralner wheel rim and showing the packing in position.
' 2 is a side elevation, partly in section,
F1 and Fig. 8 a plan of the joint between two.
against the rotation of the segments a independently of the strainer wheel, .they are connected with the keeps a in such a manner that while compelled to move with the wheel in a circumferential direction, they are at liberty to move axially in relation thereto.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a joint between two adjacent segments a, the one section being provided with a pin a which passes into an elongated hole a formed in the other section. The outer face of the ring is recessed at a for the reception of the keep a a plan of the underside of which is shown in vhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A packing device comprising a packing ring formed in segments, connected together at their adjacent extremities and provided with keeps respectively adapted to retain the said segments laterally in position in the wheel or other body to which they are applied and to prevent their circumferential movement therein. A
2. A packing device for a rotatable wheel comprising a packing ring formed in segments, perforated overlapping portions at the adjacent ends of said segments, pins in the perforations for lockin said overlapping portions, and removab e keeps bolted to said rotatable member, having portions adapted to project into recesses in said segments at their overlapping portions, whereby circumferential travel of the segments is prevented.
In testimony whereof we have signed our 1 names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
